HAWAII PUBLIC RADIO has commenced construction on a new tower for its noncommercial News-Talk-Variety KIPO/HONOLULU. The HONOLULU STAR-BULLETIN's ERIKA ENGLE reports that the site was blessed in a ceremony TUESDAY by former HPR board member and ROYAL HAWAIIAN BAND director AARON MAHI.
The 110 foot tower and transmitter building is scheduled to be completed in about four months and will allow KIPO to increase power to 26,000 watts; the station signed on with 100,000 watts in 1989 but, shortly after it signed on, it was ordered to reduce power to 3,000 watts to avoid interference with the FAA and an FCC monitoring station.
