KOST Morning Show Discusses A Firing -- On Air
March 28, 2008 at 5:37 AM (PT)
CLEAR CHANNEL AC KOST/LOS ANGELES moring host MARK WALLENGREN opened the mic on TUESDAY (3/25), and did something suprising -- he decided to take a few minutes and tell listeners about how life goes on without his former on-air partner KIM AMIDON. THE OC REGISTER writes a day earlier, WALLENGREN said he got one e-mail from a listener who complained about the "unintelligible babble" by KLAUDIA ARESTI, morning show assistant. While WALLENGREN said most e-mails are supportive, others are sending what he called "nasty notes" about hearing other women's voices.
"I was shocked," said KOST PD/MD STELLA SCHWARTZ, who said she was sitting next to WALLENGREN in the studio when he started to talk.
WALLENGREN and AMIDON were partners on air for 22 years. She was among many employees who were pink-slipped nationwide by owner CLEAR CHANNEL.
Here is part of what he had to say at 6:22a:
"Decisions were made. I don't want to get into any WWE smackdown thing, for better or for worse, for both of us -- we went through this change, and now it has been three or four months, and you guys have been amazing to me in your support of me. We are all trying to make adjustments. Things change."
"But I got an e-mail (from a female listener) yesterday. Please do us a favor, she writes, and turn off KLAUDIA's microphone. No one will ever replace KIM. How insulting to all the long time listeners, to fire KIM, and subject listeners to the inane ramblings of KLAUDIA, the show's assistant. If you keep it up with KLAUDIA's unintelligible babble, I won't (WALLENGREN trails off)"
"I (had) called up KIM. 'I will quit, let's go find a show somewhere else.' She wasn't interested. Whether it's me, whatever it is, she told me she will only do something that honors her soul and I absolutely respect that. I don't know what that means. I go to church to honor my soul. You can call it a firing. I, as a talent, negotiate a contract that has a beginning date and an ending date and when the date came for the end of the contract, they said to KIM we are not going to renew the contract. If you want to call it a firing, knock yourself out. To me it was the honoring of a contract."
"I'll tell you, as GOD's truth, she walked out of here, KIM, with a check for hundreds of thousands of dollars. If I had said, you know, 'I'm outta here, I'm gone,' I would have walked out of here with practically zero because I chose to end the contract."
"It is amazing that people still write this kind of stuff and don't have any concept or understanding of how the business works."
