On the one-year anniversary of the VIRGINIA TECH shootings, MEL WHEELER, INC. Top 40/Mainstream WXLK (K92)/ROANOKE offered free breakfasts to all uniformed fire, police or EMS members at any MCDONALD'S in the K92 listening area. The promotion came after K92 morning duo DANNY MEYERS and ZACK JACKSON debated on what to do to commemorate the day in a positive way.
"Our brainstorm was that we would do something for our first responders that were so great that day and the rest of the year," JACKSON said. "They save people's lives everyday and it's not that we don't appreciate it but because they do it for a job we forget that they're saving people's lives and they are the heroes."
Over 5,000 free breakfasts were given out on "First Responders Day" at the more than 60 MCDONALD'S in the K92 listening area; the K92 "Morning Thang" broadcast from a MCDONALD'S on the campus of VIRGINIA TECH.
"Lots of police, fire and EMS folks were thanking us for what we were doing," said K92 MD BOB PATRICK. "I was grateful for the praise but insisted on thanking them because they're the ones that put their lives on the line each and every day so we can all feel safe."
When word of this event spread to MCDONALD'S in GREENSBORO, RALEIGH, CHARLOTTE, NC and several in WEST VIRGINIA, were told by corporate higher-ups to honor the free breakfast promise to First Responders even though they weren't in the K92 listening area.
