U.K.'s Smooth Radio Can't Drop Jazz: Ofcom

GMG RADIO's attempt to gain approval from U.K, radio regulator OFCOM to allow it to drop its obligation to play 45 hours of Jazz per week on Easy Listening SMOOTH RADIO/LONDON and SMOOTH RADIO/MANCHESTER has been rejected by the agency.
GMG's proposal was to launch a digital station dedicated to Jazz while removing the music from the analog SMOOTH stations in LONDON and the NORTHWEST of ENGLAND, but OFCOM said that present policies prevent it from linking decisions on analog programming to digital programming proposals. GMG flipped JAZZ FM/LONDON to Easy Listening as SMOOTH three years ago, moving the all-Jazz format to the Internet.
