March PPM: Radio One Rules H-Town; WBEB Dominates Philly
April 23, 2008 at 2:00 PM (PT)
ARBITRON's MARCH PPM monthly results show RADIO ONE's tandem of Urban AC KMJQ and Urban-leaning Rhythmic KBXX again grabbing the top two spots 12+, reports ANTHONY ACAMPORA of RADIOCRUNCH. KMJQ scored a 6.7 share -- off slightly from its record 6.9 in FEBRUARY. KBXX was up yet again to a 6.2. CLEAR CHANNEL AC KODA, which got a huge spike during the holidays before tapering off the first two months of 2008, rebounded nicely in MARCH, moving 4.5-5.9 from FEBRUARY to take third. Sister Alternative KTBZ gained again, moving from 5th to 4th and climbing 5.3-5.5.
COX Country KKBQ, who soared to a 5.6 in FEBRUARY, had a strong MARCH at a 5.1 to round out the top five. KKBQ topped CBS rival KILT-FM, which slipped 4.3-4.1. COX Classic Country sister KTHT was also down 2.3-2.1, so Country lost nearly a full share 12+.
On the Spanish-language front, it was a good month for the major players; UNIVISION Regional Mexican KLTN (4.1-4.7) and LIBERMAN's KTJM (3.2-3.3) both showed gains. CLEAR CHANNEL Spanish Contemporary KLOL (4.0-4.3) and new UNIVISION rival KAMA (1.8-2.1) both also showed gains. UNIVISION Spanish Adult Hits KOVE (Recuerdo) was up 2.2-2.4.
MARCH also brought the switch of CBS Smooth Jazz KHJZ to Top 40. However, this month only reflects partial data for KHJZ (new calls KKHH didn't become effective until 4/1). KHJZ grabbed a 1.9 12+, but the cume was very respectable at 695,800 -- only off 12,000 from FEBRUARY. Considering a major format change, the cume number seems encouraging. At least for the full month, KHJZ's flip had little effect on CUMULUS rival KRBE, which went up over 100,000 in cume to 1,517,700 ... although they did slide 4.7-4.4 in share.
Philly's PPM Primary
In PHILADELPHIA, JERRY LEE-owned WBEB was the dominant force once again with an 8.8 share, beating its closest music rival CBS Classic Hits WOGL by a staggering 41%. WOGL looked strong as well, scoring a 6.1-6.2 move and ranking third overall. CBS News KYW was second with a 7.1.
The Urban battle between CLEAR CHANNEL and RADIO ONE in Philly is clearly going CLEAR CHANNEL's way. CLEAR CHANNEL Urban AC WDAS-FM went 5.7-6.0 while RADIO ONE competitor WRNB held at a 2.9. Meanwhile, CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WUSL was up 3.2-3.5 and widened its lead over RADIO ONE's WPHI, which slips 2.3-2.1.
In the Rock world, GREATER MEDIA Active Rock WMMR (5.4-5.3) still has a decisive edge over CBS rival WYSP (2.0-2.2). 'MMR Classic Rock sister WMGK rose 5.0-5.2. CLEAR CHANNEL Alternative WRFF ended a multiple month slide, rising 2.9-3.2 in MARCH.
