More than 40 people were taken to area hospitals after the floor caved in at a packed concert featuring SPARROW RECORDS band STARFIELD at CENTRAL HEIGHTS CHURCH in ABBOTSFORD, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA late FRIDAY night (4/25), according to the CBC NEWS website. The accident happened while an opening band was performing.
Police were unsure of the exact number of injuries but confirmed that at least three people were hospitalized with serious injuries.
Concert-goer KAREN THIESSEN told CBC NEWS that a mosh pit in front of the stage was filled with teenagers and the lights above started falling toward the crowd. After the lighting fell, the floor beneath the mosh pit collapsed, she said, and the people on it fell through to the basement.
Structural engineers were investigating the scene on SATURDAY in an attempt to understand the collapse, according to CANADA's GLOBE AND MAIL news website. City engineers believe the floor may have collapsed after one joist broke under pressure, setting off a domino effect. There were 1,200 people in attendance; the room holds 1,250.
