April 28, 2008 at 3:37 PM (PT)
The first batch of WINTER 2008 ratings results are in from ARBITRON -- and RADIOCRUNCH President ANTHONY ACAMPORA is already on the job. Starting the series of demo analysis for the top-50 markets is as look inside the advance 12+ results for NEW YORK and LOS ANGELES.
New York: WLTW Holds; Z100 Soars; WCAA Gains On WSKQ
CLEAR CHANNEL grabs the top two spots in the Big Apple as AC WLTW holds the lead position, despite a post-holiday 5.5-5.1 slide. Sister Top 40 WHTZ (Z100) soars 4.3-5.0, to move back into the #2 spot. INNER CITY Urban AC WBLS regained the format lead, rising 4.1-4.2, pulling ahead of EMMIS rival WRKS, which slid 4.3-3.9. CBS News WINS tied WBLS for fourth, rising 3.7-4.2.
As UNIVISION had hoped for, LUIS JIMENEZ returned from his one-year non-compete and caused major damage. JIMENEZ, who left SBS Tropical WSKQ at the end of 2006, resurfaced this book at crosstown UNIVISION rival WCAA in mornings. WCAA vaulted 1.8-3.0, while WSKQ dropped 4.6-3.8. This was full week, so tomorrow we'll look deeper inside those numbers.
Lots to brag about inside CLEAR CHANNEL's NEW YORK cluster besides Z100 and WLTW, as Classic Rock WAXQ (2.8-3.2) and Rhythmic AC WKTU (2.6-3.0) also posted nice gains.
Over at CBS, the aforementioned WINS had a solid book. Classic Hits WCBS-FM remains strong and steady at a 3.7. News WCBS-A went 2.5-2.4, but AC WWFS slid 2.7-2.1, as did Alternative WXRK, which moved 1.5-1.3.
Both NEW YORK Hip-Hop stations were off. EMMIS Rhythmic WQHT (3.7-3.4) and CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WWPR (3.3-3.2) were both down slightly. EMMIS did see a 1.6 partial-book debut for AAA WRXP.
Los Angeles: KIIS #1 12+; Liberman Cluster Soars
CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 KIIS took the top spot in the WINTER book, leaping 4.7-5.0 to take the #1 position from UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary KLVE, which slipped 5.0-4.7. CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KFI was flat in third place with a 4.4.
Big news out of LIBERMAN as the BURBANK, CA-based broadcaster saw its trimulcast of KBUE, KEBN, and KBUA (QUE BUENA) move into the top spot among Regional Mexican stations in LOS ANGELES. "QUE BUENA" moved 3.5-4.1, placing them 4th overall. This places "QUE BUENA" ahead of long-time leader UNIVISION's KSCA, which slipped 4.4-3.6. LIBERMAN Regional Mexican Oldies KHJ-AM went 1.4-1.7, and their ORANGE COUNTY Regional Mexican station KWIZ-FM went 0.3-0.9.
EMMIS Top 40/Rhythmic KPWR scored a 3.5-3.8 jump, moving back into the top 5 12+. CBS Smooth Jazz rebounded from a soft FALL, going 3.0-3.5, moving past CLEAR CHANNEL AC KOST, which saw a post-holiday drop from 3.9-3.3. CBS Classic Hits went 3.3-3.2 to rank ninth, while SBS Regional Mexican KLAX (3.6-3.1) and CBS Alternative KROQ (3.3-3.1) tied for 10th.
Last fall, CLEAR CHANNEL re-branded Rhythmic AC KBIG as Hot AC "104-3 My FM," and Modern AC KYSR as Alternative "98-7." KBIG was off slightly (2.0-1.8), while KYSR stayed the same at a 1.4.
There was some movement among some key niche players. It was a strong book for Urban-formatted stations. TAXI Urban AC KJLH went 0.8-1.4, while MAGIC Urban KDAY was up 0.8-1.1 -- all of this prior to the demise of RADIO ONE Urban AC KRBV, which held at a 1.3. With KPWR up 0.3, KTWV up 0.5, KHHT up 0.1, KJLH up 0.6 and KDAY up 0.3, the stations in L.A. that have a large African-American comp collectively grew 1.8 shares this book. It would seem the aforementioned stations all have even more to the gain this spring with KRBV gone.
The LOS ANGELES LAKERS stellar season and UCLA's run to the final four undoubtedly helped CLEAR CHANNEL Sports KLAC, which went 0.6-1.2 - as it beat ESPN's KSPN, which fell 0.9-0.5.
TOMORROW, we will dig deeper and see how mornings went, and if KBUE's DON CHETO was able to make inroads against KSCA's EDDIE "PIOLIN" SOTELO, along with the 18-34 battle between KIIS and KPWR.
Chicago: WGN Holds; WGCI Rises; WPPN New Spanish Language Champ
TRIBUNE Talk WGN-A held the spot in the WINDY CITY's WINTER book, along with a 5.5-5.7 rise. It placed WGN 0.2 ahead of CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WGCI, which vaulted 5.0-5.5. CBS News WBBM-A remained in third place, sliding 4.9-4.7. 'GCI sister Urban AC WVAZ surged 3.5-4.2 to grab a #4 showing.
CHICAGO has a new champ 12+ among Spanish-language stations, as UNIVISION Spanish Adult Hits WPPN soared 3.0-3.9 to round out the top 5 12+. It placed ahead of sister Regional Mexican WOJO (4.2-3.4) and WOJO's SBS rival WLEY, which climbed 2.9-3.4.
CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WKSC (3.4-3.2) and CBS Rhythmic rival WBBM-F (3.1-2.9) were both off slightly.
The AC battle in CHICAGO is getting interesting. BONNEVILLE Hot AC WTMX was up 2.6-2.7, while CLEAR CHANNEL's WLIT, coming off CHRISTMAS, slid 4.2-2.5. That is ahead of where it was (2.3) in the SUMMER. New CBS AC WCFS (FRESH) climbed 1.4-1.8, while BONNEVILLE gold-based AC WILV slid 1.9-1.6. However, the big adult music story comes from CITADEL Classic Hits WZZN (TRUE OLDIES 94.7), which vaulted 2.3-3.0.
At least on the 12+ front, BONNEVILLE Classic Rock WDRV was the leader, going 2.6-2.5. However, it was a solid book for CBS Triple A WXRT (1.8-2.3). This moved 'XRT past EMMIS Classic Rock WLUP (2.1-1.8). EMMIS Alternative WKQX (Q101) was flat at a 1.6.
More interesting stuff tomorrow from the WINDY CITY.
