Exclusive Analysis: CC Top 40s Roar In New York And L.A.
April 30, 2008 at 5:35 AM (PT)
RADIOCRUNCH President ANTHONY ACAMPORA is in the house with the latest ARBITRON WINTER book analysis, starting off with the big three markets. It was a solid book for CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 powerhouses WHTZ (Z100)/NEW YORK and KIIS/LOS ANGELES, while UNIVISION in NEW YORK and LIBERMAN in LOS ANGELES had something major to crow about. Here are the intimate details:
New York: CC Huge 25-54; Univision Sings 'Luis Luis' As WCAA Soars
CLEAR CHANNEL's NEW YORK cluster had a stellar WINTER book -- landing three of the top four stations in the coveted 25-54 cell. However, the 25-54 crown goes to INNER CITY Urban AC WBLS, which holds steady in share but rises from 3rd to 1st. CC grabbed the next three, though, with AC WLTW sliding from 1st to 2nd. Top 40 WHTZ (Z100) saw a large share gain and moves from 5th to 3rd. Classic Rock WAXQ scored a big jump from 7th to 4th.
Finishing at #5 is SBS Tropical WSKQ, which drops from its #1 spot in the FALL. However, the real story here is the impact that LUIS JIMENEZ has made for UNIVISION rival WCAA. JIMENEZ, who has been off for a year after leaving WSKQ, resurfaced after his non-compete on WCAA. WSKQ lost over a share full week 25-54, with almost all of it going to WCAA. Mornings saw an even more dramatic shift, where JIMENEZ helped WCAA soar in all target demos in AM drive.
As we continue through 25-54, SBS Spanish Contemporary WPAT rises in share slightly, but holds in 6th place. With the flip of EMMIS Smooth Jazz WQCD to AAA WRXP, we generally see some of the disenfranchised Smooth Jazz listeners move over to Urban AC. However, WBLS was flat in share and EMMIS' WRKS lost nearly a share and slid from 4th to 7th. CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic AC WKTU held in 8th. WCAA vaulted from 19th to 9th 25-54 and doubled its 25-54 share, while CBS Classic Hits WCBS-F held in 10th.
The rest of the top 20 (in descending order): CBS News WINS (#11), a tie between CITADEL Hot AC WPLJ, EMMIS Rhythmic WQHT, and CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WWPR (#12), a tie between CBS AC WWFS and Sports WFAN (#15), CITADEL Talk WABC (#17), CBS Rock WXRK (#18), and a tie between CBS News WCBS-A and EMMIS AAA WRXP (#19). However, WRXP was only on for a little over half the book.
As we move into the 18-49 demo, it's all about Top 40 WHTZ (Z100), which moves back into the top spot. WBLS was flat in share, but moved up from 3rd to 2nd. WSKQ lost the top spot and dropped to 3rd. WQHT (HOT 97) held a strong 4th, while WLTW and WWPR tied for 5th place. WKTU and WPAT tied for 7th, with both posting a nice share gain. WAXQ saw a 20% share increase to move into 9th place, and WCAA moved into the top 10 at #10.
WRKS slides from #6 to #11, WWFS was off from 10th to 12th. WINS vaults from 18th to 13th, tying them with WPLJ. WFAN, WCBS-F, WXRK, UNIVISION Regional Mexican WQBU, WABC and WCBS-A round out the top 20.
On the WCBS-F front, it's interesting to see how the station has growth 12+ year-to-year, but it's definitely a dramatically different audience. 18-49, WCBS-F is off 23%. It is up 3% 25-54, and really saw growth 35-64, where 'CBS is 70% better than "JACK" delivered in WINTER 2007.
With adults 18-34, Z100 breaks its tie with HOT 97 and takes sole possession of the top spot. HOT was up slightly in share and still ranks 2nd. WWPR remains in 3rd, WSKQ holds on to 4th place, while WBLS moves up from 6th to 5th. WCAA climbs from 8th to 6th, and WPAT from 10th to 7th. WKTU is up in share, but slides from 6th to 8th, with WLTW dropping from 5th to 9th. WRKS rounds out the top 10.
Los Angeles: KIIS Scores 12+ Win; KPWR Tops 18-34; KLVE, KBUE Solid
CLEAR CHANNEL celebrates a 12+ win for Top 40 KIIS -- along with some solid 18-49 and 25-54 growth. However, EMMIS Rhythmic KPWR (POWER 106) returned to the leadership position adults 18-34 (along with the #1 position Men 18-34, and #2 Men 18-49). UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary KLVE is the winner with adults 18-49 and 25-54. Here's a look inside each demo:
25-54: KLVE moves back into the top spot, knocking sister Regional Mexican KSCA into the #2 position. However, KSCA rival, LIBERMAN's KBUE climbs from 4th to 3rd and finished just 0.1 shares behind KSCA. KIIS climbs from #6 to #4 and claimed the top position 25-54 among English-language stations. SBS Regional Mexican KLAX suffered a large share decline and drops from 3rd to 5th 25-54.
CBS Adult Hits KCBS-F (JACK-FM) drops from 5th to 6th, but still ranks #2 among English-language stations in the demo. CLEAR CHANNEL AC KOST was essentially flat in share to the CHRISTMAS book and only slipped from #6 to #7. UNIVISION Spanish Adult Hits KRCD was 8th, and CBS Smooth Jazz KTWV rises from 13th to 9th, while CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KFI finishes out the top 10.
An off book for CBS Alternative KROQ, which may be seeing some fallout from CLEAR CHANNEL's shift of KYSR from Hot AC to an adult-leaning Alternative. KROQ slipped from 9th to 11th 25-54, and is off from 5th in the SUMMER. KROQ tied with Classic Hits KRTH. A growth book for CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic AC KHHT, which moves from 17th to 13th. KPWR and CBS Talk KLSX tied for 14th.
The rest of the top 20: CITADEL Classic Rock KLOS (from #12 to #16), CLEAR CHANNEL Hot AC KBIG (#14 to #17), SBS Latin Urban KXOL (#18 to #18), ENTRAVISION Spanish Contemporary KSSE (#22 to #19), tied with TAXI Urban AC KJLH, which rebounded from 30th to 19th.
In the 18-49 cell, KLVE holds the top spot. KBUE moves from 4th to 2nd and is the new format champ in this demo. KIIS holds steady in 3rd place, with KSCA sliding from 1st to 4th. KPWR rises from 7th to 5th. KROQ remains 6th. KLAX is off from 4th to 7th, KCBS-FM and KRCD remain 8th and 9th respectively, while KHHT and KOST tie for 10th (KHHT moving up from 12th in the FALL).
KXOL slides from 11th to 12th. KTWV posts a nice jump from 19th to 13th, KLSX from 16th to 14th, and KSSE from 19th to 15th. KSSE also tied with KBIG and KFI. KRTH slides from 16th to 18th, as KLOS drops from 14th to 19th, and KYSR rounds out the top 20.
Among adults 18-34, KPWR regains the leadership position, moving past KIIS. KBUE slides from #2 to #3, but remains #1 Regional Mexican. KLVE climbs from 5th to 4th, KSCA drops from 4th to 5th, while KROQ slides out of the top 5 and now ranks 6th (down from 3rd prior to the KYSR flip in the SUMMER). KXOL and KLAX switch spots at 7th and 8th
How has CLEAR CHANNEL's shuffling of KYSR and KBIG done so far? Let's take a look at how the CC cluster has performed in key demo ranks year-to-year, and how KROQ (who is KYSR's target has done). KBIG shifted from Rhythmic-leaning AC to Hot AC, KYSR from Modern AC to adult-leaning Alternative.
18-34: KIIS (#2 to #2), KHHT (#11 to #9), KOST (#13 to #12), KBIG (#16 to #15), KYSR (#12 to #16), while KROQ goes from #5 to #6.
18-49: KIIS (#4 to #3), KOST (#9 to #10), KHHT (#12 to #10), KBIG (#16 to #15), KYSR (#14 to #20), KROQ moves from #5 to #6.
25-54: KIIS (#7 to #4), KOST (#8 to #7), KHHT (#17 to #13), KBIG (#17 to #17), KYSR (#16 to #21), with KROQ sliding from #6 to #11.
The changes at KBIG and KYSR appear to have caused some cume to shift around. Right now, KIIS and KHHT seem to be beneficiaries -- which is good news in the CC/L.A. headquarters. While KYSR is off year-to-year, their shares could well be coming from KROQ. KIIS, for example, is up 18-49 and 25-54 since the KYSR adjustment. The fact that three of the CC stations are up in rank 25-54 is a positive as KYSR shifts some cume and audience around. The 25-54 is most noticeable, where KROQ has dropped out of the top 10.
Chicago: WGN Wins 12+, But WGCI Sweeps Demo; CBS Climbs For 'XRT, Dahl, Fresh
While TRIBUNE Talk WGN won the 12+ battle in the fall, it was legendary CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WGCI that was the winner in the key 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 demos, sweeping the top spot across all three for a second straight book. Here's a look inside the happenings in the WINDY CITY:
25-54: UNIVISION Spanish Adult Hits WPPN soared from 6th to 2nd, while SBS Regional Mexican WLEY climbed from 7th to 3rd and is now beating UNIVISION rival WOJO, which slipped from 2nd to 5th. CLEAR CHANNEL Urban AC rose from 5th and is tied with WLEY for 3rd place.
A solid book for BONNEVILLE Hot AC WTMX, which posts a move from 10th to 6th. CBS saw some nice growth in this book, most notably from AAA WXRT, which vaults from 14th to 7th 25-54. News sister WBBM-A holds in 8th, BONNEVILLE Classic Rock slides from 8th to 9th, while CLEAR CHANNEL Smooth Jazz was off from 4th to 10th.
CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WKSC and AC sister WLIT tie for 11th (WLIT was down from a holiday fueled 3rd place in the fall). They also tied with CBS Country WUSN. Tied for 14th were CBS newly signed on AC WCFS (FRESH) and EMMIS Classic Rock WLUP. WCFS was up from 21st in the old Talk format.
STEVE DAHL, who left mornings at then WCKG for Adult Hits sister WJMK, posted solid morning drive numbers, but the rest of the day was off for WJMK, causing the station to slide from 11th to 16th, tying them with CITADEL Classic Hits WZZN (TRUE OLDIES 94.7). WZZN did score a big win, ranking #1 middays among adults 35-64. CBS Rhythmic WBBM-FM and WGN tied for 18th, while BONNEVILLE AC WILV and CBS Sports WSCR tied for 20th.
18-49: WPPN and WLEY climbed to 2nd and 3rd respectively here, with WOJO slipping from 2nd to 4th. Spanish stations claimed three of the top four spots, while Urban AC WVAZ surged from 9th to 5th. WTMX moves up from 7th to 6th, moving ahead of WKSC, which slides from #5 to #7. WBBM-F (B96) dropped from 7th to 8th, but was UP slightly in share. WXRT vaults from 17th to 9th 18-49, with CRAWFORD Urban WPWX rising from 14th to 10th.
The second 10: WLUP (#10 to #11), a tie between WDRV, WLIT and WUSN for #12. WCFS rises from #20 to #15. WBBM-AM and WNUA tie for 16th, WJMK slips from 13th to 18th, tied with EMMIS Alternative WKQX (Q101.1), while UNIVISION Latin Urban WVIV ranks 20th.
18-34: WLEY moves from 5th to 2nd, while WPPN climbs from 6th to 3rd. The 18-34 battle between WBBM-FM and WKSC goes to B96, who holds in 4th, while WKSC slides from 3rd to 5th. WOJO slides from 2nd to 6th. 7th to 10th place is status quo with WPWX, WTMX, WKQX and WVIV, respectively.
