Washington: Big Urban AC Book As WHUR Lands Top Spot 18-49, 25-54
It was a solid book for the Urban AC format in the NATION'S CAPITAL with HOWARD UNIVERSITY's WHUR and RADIO ONE rival WMMJ both scored gains in the WINTER book. Could it also have to do with the flip of CITADEL Smooth Jazz WJZW to Classic Hits during the book? The SPRING book will likely give us a better gauge. CBS Urban-leaning Rhythmic WPGC remained the leader 18-34. Here's what going on in DC:
25-54: WHUR held on to the leadership position, but BONNEVILLE Talk WTOP continued to grow ever since its move to FM, landing its best 25-54 share since the move-over. WMMJ climbed from 6th to 3rd, with WPGC and CLEAR CHANNEL AC WASH (who were tied for 3rd in the FALL) slipped to 4th and 5th place, respectively. RADIO ONE Urban WKYS dropped from 5th to 6th. CBS saw another growth book for Tropical WLZL, which moved from 9th to 7th. CITADEL Hot AC WRQX dropped from 7th to 8th. RADIO ONE Gospel WPRS scored its best 25-54 share yet, and rises from 13th to 9th. CLEAR CHANNEL Classic Hits WBIG (13th to 10th) tied with Country sister WMZQ (which leapt from 12th).
CLEAR CHANNEL Alternative WWDC (DC101) slid back slightly from 8th to 12th, but is in the same share range as they have been over the last year or so. CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WIHT was only off a tick, but it slid from 10th to 13th 25-54. CBS Talk WJFK dropped from 11th to 14th, despite staying flat in share. Rounding out the top 15 was CBS AAA WTGB, which has yet to gain any traction since its flip from Classic Rock WARW.
18-49: WHUR moved past WPGC to take over the top spot. WKYS, which tied WHUR for 2nd in the FALL, dropped to 3rd this winter. WLZL vaulted from 8th to 4th, with WMMJ surging from 10th to 5th. WIHT was steady in share, but slid from 5th to 6th. WTOP remained in 7th place, but saw growth in share for a fourth straight book. WASH dipped from 6th to 8th. DC101 dropped from an abnormaly high fall book and slipped from 4th to 9th, tying with WRQX. WPRS rose from 13th to 11th. WJFK and WMZQ tied for 12th, as WBIG held in 14th, and WTGB remained 15th.
18-34: WPGC held the top spot 18-34, but Its lead over WKYS, which was almost 6 shares last SPRING, is now down to just over a half-share, as WKYS continued to close the gap. A huge book for WLZL in 18-34, as they rose from 5th to 3rd. WIHT held steady in 4th, as DC101 dropped to 5th.
Phoenix: KHOT Sweeps; Clear Channel Scores Big 25-54 Book; KKFR Tops KZON 18-34, 18-49
UNIVISION Regional Mexican KHOT scored an across-the-board sweep, taking the top spot among adults 18-34, 18-49, and 25-54 this book -- and really won all three cells running away. However, the big story came in the 25-54 demo, where CLEAR CHANNEL scored major domination, taking the 2nd through 5th positions -- and top four spots among English-language stations.AC KESZ and Hot AC KMXP tied for 2nd place, while News/Talk KFYI rose from 6th to 4th to tie with Country KNIX. Now, keep in mind that the shares in PHOENIX are very tight, with only a half-share separating #2 and #7. UNIVISION Spanish Adult Hits KQMR (RECUERDO) rose from 7th to 6th. BONNEVILLE Adult Hits KPKX dropped from 5th to 7th, tied with SANDUSKY Active Rock KUPD (after rising from 13th). SANDUSKY also saw Rock KDKB score a fourth straight up book and move from 11th to 9th, tying with CBS Country KMLE and CLEAR CHANNEL Smooth Jazz KYOT.
SANDUSKY Classic Rock KSLX was 12th, ENTRAVISION Regional Mexican KLNZ rose from 15th to 13th, tying with BONNEVILLE Talk KTAR-FM (which had its best book since moving to FM). CLEAR CHANNEL Top KZZP was 15th. Another rough book for CBS Classic Hits KOOL, which dipped for a fourth straight book. The four-book rank trend on KOOL: #2 to #4 to #8 to #16. TRUMPER Rhythmic AC KMVA had its best 25-54 book to date, moving from 20th to 17th (only a tenth behind KOOL). BONNEVILLE Sports KTAR-A and CBS Rhythmic KZON tied for 18th, with RIVIERA Rhythmic KKFR 20th.
18-49: KHOT won this one easily as well, while KUPD shook off a lower than normal book to move back into 2nd place. KNIX climbed from 6th to 3rd, with KMXP now 4th and KESZ 5th. KQMR slid from 5th to 6th. KLNZ rose from 9th to 7th, tied with KMLE. KZZP dipped from 4th to 9th, with KDKB and KFYI tied for 10th place.
KPKX slid from 8th to 12th; KYOT moved up from 17th to 13th as KSLX dipped from 12th to 14th. KKFR tied with KTAR-FM for 15th, putting it ahead of Rhythmic rival KZON (which dropped from 9th to 17th). KZON was tied with KMVA. KOOL was off here as well, dipping to 19th place (they were as high as 7th in the SUMMER). RIVIERA Alternative KEDJ slid down to 20th place.
18-34: KHOT was a dominant #1. KUPD rebounded from a soft FALL and rose from 9th all the way to 2nd. KLNZ climbed from 6th to 3rd. KZZP dipped from 2nd to 4th. A big 18-34 book for KNIX, which surged from 16th to 5th. KMXP dropped from 4th to 6th. KQMR was now 7th. Meanwhile, the war between KKFR and KZON went to KKFR this time around. KKFR ranked 8th and KZON 9th, despite KZON's much more signficant signal. KMLE rounded out the top 10.
San Diego: KIOZ, KYXY Share Top Honors; XMOR Overtakes Z90 18-34; XHRM Leaps 25-54
A stellar book for CLEAR CHANNEL Active Rock KIOZ, which took both the 18-34 and 18-49 honors, fueled by a leap with THE MIKEY SHOW in morning drive. KIOZ beat the combined share of its two Alternative rivals -- FINEST CITY's XTRA (91X) and LINCOLN FINANCIAL's KBZT in the 18-34 demo -- although KBZT and KIOZ were much closer on the upper end.Meanwhile, the hotly contested battle between MEC Rhythmic XMOR and FINEST CITY's XHTZ (Z90) went to XMOR in the 18-34 cell, although Z90 took 18-49 and 25-54 honors in the war. Specifically, here's a look inside SAN DIEGO:
25-54: CBS AC KYXY moved back to the top spot, just ahead of FINEST CITY Rhythmic AC XHRM (MAGIC 92.5), which vaulted from 7th to 2nd. CLEAR CHANNEL Classic Rock KGB rose from 5th to 3rd. The FALL champ, LINCOLN FINANCIAL Country KSON dropped down to 4th. UNIVISION Regional Mexican KLNV dipped from 4th to 5th. Tied for 6th were UNIVISION Spanish Adult Hits KLQV (RECUERDO) and CLEAR CHANNEL Hot AC KMYI. LINCOLN FINANCIAL Smooth Jazz KIFM dipped from 6th to 8th. KIOZ and KBZT tie for 9th place (and round out the top 10).
CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 KHTS (CHANNEL 93.3) moved from 10th to 11th. CLEAR CHANNEL News/Talk KOGO finished 12th, tied with UNI RADIO Regional Mexican XHTY. After a huge book, MIDWEST TV Adult Hits KFMB-FM (JACK-FM) slid from 2nd to 14th, coming off what was an abnormaly high book in the FALL. XTRA rose to 15th. CLEAR CHANNEL Country KUSS moved 19th to 16th, Z90 held in 17th, edging out XMOR (who rose from 22nd to 18th). MIDWEST TV News/Talk KFMB-A dipped from 15th to 19th with BROADCAST OF THE AMERICAS Sports XPRS-A ranking 20th. Missing the top 20: COMPASS AAA KPRI and CBS Hot AC KSCF (SOPHIE), which tied for 21st, although KSCF did have its best book since its sign-on.
18-49: KIOZ leapy from 4th to 1st place, with a lot of the 18-49 clearly being driven by the huge 18-34. Holding in 2nd place is KHTS, although they are tied with KLNV (who drops from a 1st place ranking in the Fall). XHRM surges from 8th to 4th, with KSON holding steady in 5th place, tying them with KYXY. KMYI climbs from 11th to 7th, with KGB remaining in 8th. KLQV climbs from 14th to 9th and KBZT moves from 13th to 10th. XHTY and Z90 tie for 11th, with XMOR and 91X tied for 13th (although the latter drops all the way from 6th). KFMB-FM plummets from 3rd to 15th, KOGO rises from 17th to 16th, KIFM is now 17th (down from 14th in the FALL). KUSS inches up to 18th, with KSCF 19th, tying them with MVS Regional Mexican XOCL.
18-34: A dominant win here for CLEAR CHANNEL as KIOZ and KHTS took the top two positions. KLNV slid back to 3rd. The big news 18-34 was that XMOR climbed from 6th to 4th and beat rival Z90 in demo. KLQV nearly doubled its share and rose from 15th to 6th. XHTY held in 7th, KBZT and 91X tied for 8th, while KSON rounded out the top 10.
Milwaukee: WXSS, WHQG, WLDB Score Winter Gains; WMYX Slides
There were a variety of winners in the WINTER in MILWAUKEE. SAGA Rock WHQG took over the top spot 25-54, while sister Classic Rock WKLH tied CLEAR CHANNEL Country WMIL for the #2 position. It was a photo finish inside the top 5, with ENTERCOM Top 40 WXSS and JOURNAL News/Talk WTMJ tying for 4th place. CLEAR CHANNEL Classic Hits WRIT rose from 9th to 6th, while SAGA Urban AC WJMR dipped from 3rd to 7th, placing just ahead of CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WKKV, which moved from 11th to 8th. Milwaukee's AC battle heats up. MILWAUKEE RADIO ALLIANCE Hot AC surged from 16th to 11th, tying JOURNAL Hot AC WKTI. Both stations finished ahead of ENTERCOM Hot AC WMYX, which dropped all the way from 2nd to 13th. WMYX had a strong FALL book due to holiday music, although its 25-54 share in the WINTER was the same as SUMMER 2007. BUSTOS Regional Mexican WDDW ranked 14th with MILWAUKEE RADIO ALLIANCE Alternative WLUM 15th.
18-49: WXSS held the top spot yet again, although WHQG rose almost a share-and-a-half to move from 3rd to 2nd. WMIL surged from 7th to 3rd, while WKKV was stable in 4th. Kansas City: KPRS, KQRC Share Winter Crown; Country Grows
For the record, the recap of KANSAS CITY that appeared YESTERDAY was the FALL book review. Below is a review of the WINTER book. In the WINTER, ENTERCOM had three stations (not one) in the top 10 among adults 25-54.
CARTER Urban KPRS and ENTERCOM Active Rock KQRC shared the demo leadership positions in KANSAS CITY. KPRS was the 18-34 and 18-49 champ, while KQRC took the 25-54 crown.KQRC remained the #1 station among both adults 18-49 and 25-54, while KPRS continued to be the leader with adults 18-34. All three Country stations saw growth in the WINTE, with adults 25-54 -- and all three now rank among the top seven with adults 25-54 (and dramatically up from a year ago).
Let's start with 25-54:
KQRC remained #1, while CUMULUS Classic Rock KCFX climbed from 3rd to 2nd. It was the fifth straight up book for KCFX, and the first since ENTERCOM flipped rival KYYS to AAA KBLV (KYYS has replaced the KKHK calls on its sister Regional Mexican AM). Both WILKS Country stations landed in the top 5. KFKF leapt from 7th to 3rd, tied with KPRS. KBEQ jumps from 10th to 5th, tied CUMULUS Adult Hits KCJK (JACK-FM). ENTERCOM Country WDAF (THE WOLF) rose from 13th to 11th to 7th. They tied UNION Sports WHB. WILKS Top 40 KMXV slid from 4th to 9th, but lost only about a half-share (which shows how competitive the market is). ENTERCOM News/Talk KMBZ and CUMULUS Urban AC KMJK tied for #10.
ENTERCOM AC KUDL rose from 14th to 12th, with CUMULUS Classic Hits KCMO in 13th place. ENTERCOM AAA KBLV (long-time Classic Rock KYYS) held steady in share and inched up to 14th place. CUMULUS Talk KCMO-A rose from 19th to tie KBLV for 14th place.
18-49: KQRC and KPRS were both off in share, but they switched rankers as KQRC reclaimed the #1 position. KCFX and KMXV swapped spots to be 3rd and 4th, respectively. WILKS saw Country sisters KFKF and KBEQ rose to 5th and 6th, respectively (they were tied for 7th in the fall). WDAF now has a three-book rank trend from 15th to 12th to 8th. CUMULUS Rhythmic KCHZ slid from 5th to 9th, tied with WHB to round out the top 10.
KMJK slipped from 10th to 11th, as KUDL moved up to 11th (all the way from 16th in the FALL). ENTERCOM Alternative KRBZ WAs 13th, with KCKC 14th (down from a holiday 7th place), tied with KMBZ.
18-34: KPRS and KQRC remained the top two. KMXV held steady but swapped positions with KCHZ. The Country rankers were different in the younger demos, as WDAF moved from 9th to 5th, topping KBEQ (6th) and KFKF (7th). KFKF was tied with KRBZ. WHB ranked 9th, and KCJK rounded out the top 10.
