Listener Sues Over 'Contest' That Wasn't

The winner of a trip from SBS Spanish Hits WSKQ (MEGA 97.9)/NEW YORK is suing the station and the prize promoter for not disclosing that the "free trip" to the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC offered in the contest actually cost $399 plus airfare.
GABRIELA CARMONA of QUEENS filed suit against the station's parent SBS and ALL STAR VACATION MARKETING GROUP in MANHATTAN Federal court over the APRIL 13th contest. CARMONA described the contest as MAGA DJ VEGA saying that the first 35 callers to correctly name RUBEN BLADES' native country would receive a trip, and that when she called, she was immediately switched to a travel agency without being asked the answer to the question. She said that the agency asked for a credit card number to charge the $399 "administrative fee."
For its part, the station says that the "contest" was a paid advertisement and not a station promotion. GM FRANK FLORES told the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS that "It's a commercial. That's all it is. But that being said, we told them to fix the problem or we're not going to do business with you."
