KPCC, KCRW Win Big At L.A. Press Club Awards

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PUBLIC RADIO noncommercial News-Talk KPCC/LOS ANGELES and SANTA MONICA COLLEGE's noncommercial AAA-Talk KCRW/SANTA MONICA were the big winners at the L.A. PRESS CLUB's 50th annual SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Journalism Awards SATURDAY night (6/21).
KPCC's STEVEN CUEVAS took home the Journalist of the Year title in the radio category, with fellow KPCC newspeople FRANK STOLTZE and PATRICIA NAZARIO taking home second place and honorable mention, respectively. KPCC's CUEVAS, BROOKE BINKOWSKI, JULIE SMALL, BRIAN WATT, and DOUALU XAYJAOTHAO won the Breaking News award for coverage of wildfires in the region on PATT MORRISON's "AIR TALK" show. KCLU/THOUSAND OAKS' LANCE OROZCO win second place in the category, with KCRW/SANTA MONICA's WARREN OLNEY and KAREN RADZINER taking honorable mention. CUEVAS also won for best feature, while KPCC's ADOLFO GUZMAN-LOPEZ won for entertainment reporting and CHERYL DEVALL, GUZMAN-LOPEZ, and STOLTZE won for Investigative/Series.
WALL STREET JOURNAL film critic JOE MORGANSTERN's reviews for KCRW won the criticism category, with KCRW's OLNEY and RADZINER winning the Talk/Public Affairs category for an episode of "WHICH WAY, L.A.?" and the News Bureau category for "House Votes" (tied with the CATALINA ISLAND CONSERVANCY's "Isla Earth Radio Series"), KCRW's MATT HOLZMAN won for use of sound, and KCRW's GERALD ZELINGER won for his documentary, "Remembering Columbia Square," about the closed former CBS facility on Sunset Boulevard.
MOUNT SAN ANTONIO COMMUNITY COLLEGE's noncommercial Variety KSAK/WALNUT's CASON SMITH won the Sports category for a Super Bowl segment.
