CANADA's SUPREME COURT has overturned a libel ruling against then-CKNW-A/VANCOUVER host RAFE MAIR and the station's then-owner WESTERN INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS, determining that MAIR did not libel anti-gay activist KARI SIMPSON in 1999.
MAIR ripped SIMPSON in an OCTOBER 25, 1999 editorial, comparing her to the KLAN, skinheads, and HITLER for trying to ban three books about gay couples from the libraries in SURREY, BC schools and prompting SIMPSON to sue. SIMPSON lost the trial but won on appeal to the BRITISH COLUMBIA COURT OF APPEAL.
MAIR, who is no longer on CKNW, later hosted a show at crosstown CKBD-A until 2005 and now appears on CBC VANCOUVER's "EARLY EDITION."
