Former WLAV/GRAND RAPIDS owner JOHN SHEPARD died Monday, reports WOOD-TV. He was 81. SHEPARD, who owned WLAV A-F during their rise to becoming a ratings powerhouse beginning in the 1970s, owned many other stations around the country during a long career.
He first came to GRAND RAPIDS in 1953 as a Sales Manager for the radio station. Eventually he became the owner, and sold it in the mid-1980s to ADAMS BROADCASTING. WLAV is now owned by CITADEL BROADCASTING.
His son said SHEPARD had been in failing health for some time
