BRITAIN's largest pay-TV firm BSKYB, owned by RUPERT MURDOCH's NEWS CORP, is partnering with the UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP to launch an online subscription music service. According to REUTERS, the service will offer downloads to keep and unlimited listening through streaming for a single monthly subscription service. The tracks will be in the mp3 format, meaning they can be used on many devices including the iPOD and mobile phones.
While directly in the line of fire would be other subscription services such as NAPSTER, observers believe the ultimate goal is to take on APPLE's iTUNES. The cost for this service have been announced yet.
BSKYB will initially launch the new joint venture with UMG in BRITAIN and IRELAND. They're also in talks with other music groups for their respective content.
