Post Sale, Clear Channel Cost Cutting Continues

CRAINSNEWYORK.COM comments on the changes -- post sale -- at CLEAR CHANNEL, noting WAXQ (Q 104.3)/NEW YORK PD BOB BUCHMAN is simply the latest executive to leave the company (NET NEWS 7/30). Reports say he will not be replaced.
BUCHMANN’s departure is one of many that have taken place at CLEAR CHANNEL stations as the parent company prepared to go private and as advertising revenue across the industry has been hammered by competition from the Internet.
Legendary PD JIM RYAN of AC WLTW/NEW YORK stepped down this spring (NET NEWS 1/23), following a string of big name DJs at the station, including VALERIE SMALDONE AND AL BERNSTEIN. Urban WWPR also lost its PD (NET NEWS 1/30). RYAN was replaced by CHRIS CONLEY. CADILLAC JACK, PD for two CLEAR CHANNEL stations in BOSTON, added that position at WWPR.
According to an internal memo, BUCHMANN’s position will be taken over by CCNY SVP/Programming And Marketing TOM POLEMAN. He will work with the station’s APD ERIC WELLMAN.
In addition, BUCHMANN’s daily on-air position, from 2-4p, will be absorbed by other DJs, according to a station insider.
