Condolences to family and friends of longtime ABC NEWS "NIGHTLINE" Producer LEROY SIEVERS, who died FRIDAY at his MARYLAND home after a two and a half year battle with colon cancer at 53. SIEVERS, who previously worked for CBS NEWS, became widely known and celebrated in ghis final years for his "MY CANCER" blog at NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO's website and commentaries on the air at NPR. The blog, in which SIEVERS candidly chronicled his travails and discussed cancer-related issues, generated hundreds of comments per post that grew into an online community of cancer patients and their families.
...larger than life while he walked among us, and destined to be even larger in our memories.
SIEVERS' friend and co-worker TED KOPPEL wrote an appreciation for the NPR website, in which he describes their trip to IRAQ and, quoting JOHN LENNON's "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans," said of SIEVERS, "Cancer was not in LEROY's plans. But he turned his battle with cancer into the most dramatic, the most moving and the most important story of his life. He touched so many of you who are fighting your own battles. He inspired courage; not simply by what he wrote in his blog every day, but by who he was: larger than life while he walked among us, and destined to be even larger in our memories."
