PILLAR OF FIRE Christian Contemporary WAWZ (STAR 99.1)/MIDDLESEX Station Mgr. SCOTT TAYLOR offered to dress up as the "GOOD GOLLY" GREEN GIANT’s sidekick "CELERY SPROUT," if the station could raise more than 500 lbs of canned food in a morning. Imagine his surprise when after just two hours, 663 pounds of food was collected. True to his word, SCOTT celebrated by donning the green leaves and funny hat of SPROUT.
For the past three weeks, morning show sidekick DAVID A. DEIN dressed as the "GOOD GOLLY" GREEN GIANT while doing van stops to collect bags of food for local food banks. So far the "Be A Hero" Canned Food Drive has raised 3,260 lbs of food for families in need. Everyone who donated a bag of food received a free CD from STAR 99.1 artists such as THIRD DAY, LEELAND, BRANDON HEATH, CASTING CROWNS and FIREFLIGHT.
To pay off his offer, SCOTT went with DAVID to a local DUNKIN’ DONUTS, dressed in their matching outfits. Listeners were encouraged to drop off a bag of food and snap a photo with SCOTT. STAR 99.1 PD/morning show host JOHNNY STONE reacted, "I've never had a Station Manager that was willing to step up and help families like SCOTT. He said he would put on the CELERY SPROUT costume when we raised lots of food (before he saw it, by the way) and even more food was raised for the families."
Added TAYLOR, "Next time I will definitely see the costume first but this was all for a good cause. It was great to see STAR 99.1 listeners stepping up."
