CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KFYI-A/PHOENIX morning host BRUCE JACOBS is taking heat for ripping the widow of a police officer killed by an illegal immigrant for her stand calling for immigration reform. JULIE ERFLE's husband NICK was killed a year ago by an illegal immigrant, and some, including JACOBS, blame in part a PHOENIX police rule preventing officers from asking suspects about their immigration status for the murder.
ERFLE has taken a public position, including at a WASHINGTON event, calling for a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, and JACOBS took her to task on WEDNESDAY's show, saying, "You ought to be ashamed of yourself, JULIE ERFLE. I don't know how you can look at your kids and do this ... When the next police officer is gunned down or killed, is it fair to blame you? Because I am going to give you partial blame. Put that in your legacy for your husband."
The ARIZONA REPUBLIC reports that CASINO ARIZONA pulled its advertising from the station for SEPTEMBER and a coalition of law-enforcement groups is protesting JACOBS. PHOENIX Police Chief JACK HARRIS called JACOBS' comments "reprehensible." ERFLE said, "I was asked to speak on the human costs of illegal immigration, and I think I'm qualified to speak on that. For him to go on the attack like that without knowing why I went to D.C. or knowing what I was saying was pretty reprehensible."
JACOBS refused comment to the REPUBLIC, saying in an e-mail, "I don't speak to your lying publication."
