The CRTC grants licenses for new commercial FM stations in OTTAWA-GATINEAU to ASTRAL MEDIA RADIO and FRANK TORRES. ASTRAL will get 45,000 watts at 99.7 FM for what it calls a "comfort radio" format (soft AC), beating out applications by CHRISTIAN HIT RADIO, MARK STEVEN MAHEU, and OTTAWA MEDIA INC. TORRES will operate with 1,300 watts at 101.9 FM with a "blues-based Rock format," beating out applications by CORUS, FISTON KALAMBAY MUTOMBO, INSTANT INFORMATION SERVICES INC., RADIO DE LA COMMUNAUTE FRANCOPHONE D'OTTAWA, and REEL-RADIO. The agency also rejected INSTANT's application to increase the power of its Tourist Information CIIO/OTTAWA from 25 to 427 watts at 99.7 FM.
While the CRTC was dealing with stations in the Capital area, it gave RNC MEDIA INC. the go-aheaad to delete conditions requiring its French Classical-Jazz-AC CHLX (PLANETE 97.1)/GATINEAU to operate in a specialty FM format. The station will be allowed to flip to an AC format heavy on ballads and love songs, wiith 20% Jazz content.
Also getting a new license is GUY SIMARD, who won CRTC approval for a new French-language FM in MONTMAGNY, QC at 90.3 FM, with an additional transmitter at 92.5 FM in SAINT-FABIEN-DE-PANET, QC. The new station will air an Adult Pop format with 84 hours of programming per week simulcast from CHOX/LA POCATIERE, QC.
And LA RADIO TOURISTIQUE DE QUEBEC, INC. was denied a power increase from 12.7 watts to 79.4 watts at a lower antenna height for its French low-power Tourist Information CKJF/QUEBEC CITY, QC but granted a similar increase to 20.4 watts for its French low-power Tourist Information CJNG/QUEBEC CITY.
