September 2, 2008 at 5:19 AM (PT)
New ownership brings a new name for Rock VIRGIN RADIO/LONDON, with a rebranding to ABSOLUTE RADIO in the works for OCTOBER 1. The station is obliged to change its name after the sale, which did not include a license to use the VIRGIN brand. TIML, a division of TIMES OF INDIA GROUP, bought the station from SCOTTISH MEDIA GROUP for 53.2 million pounds in JUNE and was given 90 days to change the name. ABSOLUTE RADIO will manage and operate the station for TIML.
The new name will be accompanied by a lineup shuffle, with late evening host GEOFF LLOYD moving to afternoon drive. Present afternoon host NICK JACKSON moves to early afternoon. BEN JONES will now handle 8p-midnight and former KERRANG! host TONY SHAW will take over FRIDAY and SATURDAY evenings 10p-1a. TRENT FM host JO RUSSELL will come aboard for weekend mornings.
Exiting will be weekend morning hosts JK AND JOEL, FRIDAY and SATURDAY "PARTY CLASSICS" evening host and former SPANDAU BALLET singer TONY HADLEY, and host ROBIN BURKE.
