NYC Gets Dueling Christmas Stations

The CHRISTMAS music chess match between NEW YORK powerhouses CLEAR CHANNEL AC WLTW (106.7 FM) and CBS Classic Hits WCBS-F resolved itself yesterday when both stations flipped the holiday switch, reports DAVID HINKLEY in THE DAILY NEWS. From now through DECEMBER 25th, they're both all-CHRISTMAS.
"You always try to pick the right moment," said WLTW PD CHRIS CONLEY. "This weekend I was in four places where they were playing music -- stores, cabs -- and they all had LITE-FM's [weekend CHRISTMAS] music on. I figured if all these people are ready, let's go."
LITE has gone all-CHRISTMAS for several years and always scores a big ratings spike, though CONLEY says it's not quite that simple. "About half your listeners don't want that much," he says. "So they may go somewhere else for a while. But the other half love it, giving you that big core listenership, and you pick up lots of listeners from other stations."
For listeners, CONLEY says, "It's probably nice" to have two all-CHRISTMAS stations, which NEW YORK hasn't always had. "But as a programmer, sure, I'd rather have it all for LITE."
