All Access Exclusive: December PPM Report Part 1
January 5, 2009 at 5:15 AM (PT)
RADIOCRUNCH/MUSICRUNCH partners KEVIN MCCABE and ANTHONY ACAMPORA have pored through the DECEMBER PPM results, which were released by ARBITRON last WEDNESDAY (12/31/08). The first markets analyzed were NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES, CHICAGO, along with NASSAU-SUFFOLK, and RIVERSIDE-SAN BERNARDINO.
New York: Holiday Hits Send WLTW To #1 25-54; Z100 Still Tops 18-34, 18-49
CLEAR CHANNEL AC WLTW (LITE-FM) got a boost from holiday music, but not to the level that stations in other markets did. The near one-share gain among adults 25-54 led it past Top 40 sister WHTZ (Z100) in that cell, but Z100 still captured the top spot 18-34 and 18-49.
A year ago the diary was still the official method of measurement, but NEW YORK was in pre-currency. Year-to-year, WLTW was off 25% in share among adults 25-54, so CHRISTMAS music clearly didn't have the same impact. Meanwhile, CBS Classic Hits WCBS-F went with the yuletide theme as well on NOVEMBER 21st (three weeks of the DECEMBER measurement month), but actually saw a decline from NOVEMBER -- and a very noticeable 25% drop from a year ago as well with 25-54 adults.
Other action inside 25-54: Z100 still ranked a solid 2nd. SBS continued to see growth for Tropical WSKQ, which ranked 3rd and is up year-to-year. CLEAR CHANNEL Classic Rock WAXQ moved into 4th place (up from 5th in NOVEMBER), with Rhythmic AC sister WKTU and INNER CITY Urban AC WBLS tied for 5th. CLEAR CHANNEL scored four stations among the top five, showing a dominant position inside the BIG APPLE. Post-election, CBS News WINS slid from 4th in NOVEMBER to 7th in DECEMBER. However, there was still a major interest in news as WINS was up 62% from year-ago pre-currency results. In NOVEMBER, CITADEL Hot AC WPLJ and EMMIS Urban AC WRKS were tied for 7th, and they slid to 8th and 9th respectively in DECEMBER. Two CBS stations tied for 10th: WCBS-F and AC WWFS, with the latter seeing a bump despite not shifting to All-CHRISTMAS.
Owning positions 12-20: CBS Sports WFAN (15th to 12th), EMMIS Rhythmic WQHT (11th to 13th), SBS Spanish Contemporary WPAT (14th to 14th), CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WWPR (POWER 105)(12th to 15th). CBS News WCBS-A, Rock WXRK, UNIVISION Tropical WCAA, and CITADEL Talk WABC ranked 16th through 19th, respectively, for a second month, with WABC tying with ESPN Sports WEPN. Also of note, EMMIS saw a slight gain for AAA WRXP, which ranked 21st but achieved its highest PPM 25-54 shares to date.
18-49: Z100 was still the dominant performer here, but LITE-FM climbed from 3rd to 2nd. WSKQ was a solid 3rd, while WKTU leapt from 7th to 4th. EMMIS Top 40/Rhythmic WQHT (HOT 97) slid back from 3rd to 5th. A big month for WBLS, which soared from 11th to 6th and gained almost a full share, tying a steady WPLJ. WAXQ ranked 8th, but sister WWPR had an off month in all demos and dropped from 5th to 9th 18-49. WINS rounded out the top 10. WWFS moved from 14th to 11th to pass sister WCBS-F. WRKS slid from 9th to 13thn as WBLS moved well past it. WPAT and WFAN finished up the top 15.
18-34: Z100 remained a solid #1 and a consistent double-digit performer. They lead HOT 97 by 53%. WSKQ moved from 4th to 3rd, switching places with POWER 105. WKTU, WBLS, WWFS, WCBS-FM and WPLJ rounded out the top 10.
Los Angeles: KIIS Holds 18-34, 18-49 As KOST Soars To #1 25-54
As in NEW YORK, CLEAR CHANNEL's heritage Top 40 remained #1 in the 18-34 and 18-49 cells, but its legendary AC rides SANTA CLAUS to #1 25-54. Top 40 KIIS retained its leadership position in the younger demos, but KOST rose to the top spot in the upper demo.
25-54: KOST soared from 7th in NOVEMBER all the way to #1 in DECEMBER, narrowly beating KIIS by just two-tenths. KIIS actually grew in share in DECEMBER, but the KOST surge of 46% in DECEMBER was too much to overcome. SBS Regional Mexican KXOL (LA RAZA), which tied KIIS for the top spot in NOVEMBER, slid back to 3rd. CBS Alternative KROQ and UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary KLVE tied for 4th place. UNIVISION also grabbed the #6 and #7 spots with Spanish Adult Hits KRCD (RECUERDO) and Regional Mexican KSCA, respectively. CLEAR CHANNEL Hot AC KBIG (MY-FM) landed its highest share in five months and rose from 11th to 8th. CBS Classic Hits KRTH dipped from 7th to 9th, tying sister Adult Hits KCBS-FM (JACK-FM). However, JACK-FM was down for a 5th straight month.
The Smooth AC format is in dire straits in PPM, although LOS ANGELES is clearly an exception. The station that launched the format in 1987, CBS outlet KTWV ranked 11th last month, tying EMMIS Rhythmic KPWR (POWER 106). CITADEL Classic Rock KLOS and LIBERMAN Regional Mexican KBUE (QUE BUENA) tied for 13th place. Achieving a new high was ENTRAVISION Spanish Adult Hits KLYY (JOSE) -- which leapt from 19th to 15th. CLEAR CHANNEL Alternative KYSR dipped from 13th to 16th, putting them in a tie with two sister outlets: Talk KFI and Rhythmic AC KHHT (HOT 92.3). Two CBS outlets tied for 19th place: News KNX and FM Talk KLSX. For KNX, the station was on a very solid uptick, growing 57% since AUGUST. Also of note is that when most News stations declined post election, KNX saw growth.
Outside the top 20, we wanted to note the slow but steady growth for EMMIS Rhythmic AC KMVN (MOVIN' 93-9). The station has undergone a musical transition, which started on LABOR DAY WEEKEND -- incorporating '80s weekends and more '80s pop music into its weekday mix. KMVN saw its best 25-54 adult numbers to date and is starting to grow in the 18-49 and 25-54 female cells. This is where PPM is such a great tool as these adjustments made by MOVIN' are showing in metered data -- a diary could take multiple books. They are also starting to overlap era-wise with JACK-FM, which has seen a steady decline in the female 25-54 demo (43% in four months).
18-49: KIIS continued to win this cell handily, although holiday music pushed KOST from 8th to 2nd. KLAX and KROQ tied for 3rd. RECUERDO scored its highest 18-49 ratings to date in PPM and rose to 5th as UNIVISION's highest rated station. A best-ever 18-49 result for POWER 106, which rose from 8th to 6th. KLVE slid to 7th, down from 2nd in OCTOBER -- maybe some friendly fire from RECUERDO? KSCA slid from 5th to 8th, with KBIG and KBUE tying for 9th. Spanish-language stations scored 5 of the top-10 spots 18-49 and 4 of the top 10 25-54.
KCBS-F held in 11th place, while JOSE leapt from 15th to 12th and scored its highest ratings since its format change. ENTRAVISION KLYY (JOSE) tied with KTWV and KYSR. KRTH dipped from 12th to 15th, while there's a three-way tie between KHHT, KLOS,and SBS Latin Urban KXOL for 16th place. ENTRAVISION Spanish Contemporary KSSE was 19th with KFI and KMVN tying for 20th. It's the first time MOVIN'has been top 20 in this demo since it launched. The lack of use for AM in LOS ANGELES among younger demos is so evident, with KFI the only AM outlet in the entire top 20 18-49 -- unlike NEW YORK where four AMs cracked the top 20 -- and KFI ranks 20th.
18-34: KIIS continued to lead the way here, but POWER 106 had its best month yet and grew almost a full share to rank 2nd, moving ahead of KLAX. KROQ held in 4th place, and also achieves its best numbers since AUGUST. KSCA held in 5th place, while RECUERDO leapt from 9th to 6th. KBUE was 7th, with KOST rising from 12th to 8th. KBIG and KLVE rounded out the top 10.
Other notes: BONNEVILLE continued to have challenges with AAA KSWD (THE SOUND). The station currently ranks 31st among adults 25-54 and is actually declining -- sliding 43% since AUGUST.
Chicago: LITE Goes Up In The Windy City; V103 Keeps Rising
The biggest spike for CHRISTMAS Music seems to have come out of CHICAGO, where CLEAR CHANNEL AC WLIT (LITE-FM) soared into the top spot across all three demos. WLIT went from 12th to 1st 25-54, and 14th to 1st with adults 18-34 and 18-49 -- a simply amazing jump in such a highly competitive month. They saw growth of 257% 18-34, 186% 18-49 and 153% 25-54 -- nothing short of amazing from NOVEMBER to DECEMBER.
25-54: WLIT soared all the way to the top spot, placing it well ahead of the pack. It sort of overshadowed the nice increases for Urban AC sister WVAZ (V103), which has seen a 66% growth since SEPTEMBER and ranked a solid 2nd. CBS News WBBM-A kept its post-election momentum, rising from 4th to 3rd. BONNEVILLE Classic Rock WDRV (THE DRIVE) slid for a fifth straight month in share and dropped from 2nd to 4th. UNIVISION Regional Mexican WOJO dipped from 3rd to 5th. BONNEVILLE is also seeing steady decline for Hot AC WTMX (THE MIX), which dropped from 5th to 6th and is off 24% since AUGUST. CBS Country WUSN (US99) was steady in 7th. SBS Regional Mexican WLEY (LA LEY) dipped from 6th to 8th. Three stations tied for 9th: CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WGCI, CITADEL Classic Hits WLS-F (TRUE OLDIES 94-7) and EMMIS Rock WLUP.
CBS AAA WXRT inched up to 12th. WBEZ ALLIANCE non-commercial News/Talk WBEZ rose from 16th to 13th, tying BONNEVILLE gold-based AC WILV (LOVE-FM). CITADEL Talk WLS-A dropped from 10th to 15th post-election. UNIVISION Spanish Oldies WPPN (RECUERDO) remained 16th, while CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WKSC was 17th. CBS AC WCFS (FRESH) was clearly affected by WLIT's move to holiday music. The station dropped from 14th to 18th, tying Adult Hits sister WJMK (JACK-FM) and TRIBUNE Talk WGN.
18-49: In this cell, we see WLIT #1 yet again -- and by a pretty big margin. V103 held in 2nd place, but grew almost a full share. WOJO slid from #1 to #3, with US99 still a strong 4th. WTMX dipped from 3rd to 5th. WBBM-A rose from 8th to 6th -- and got its second highest 18-49 PPM share to date. WGCI rose from 9th to 7th and achieved its best PPM 18-49 results so far. WKSC slid from 6th to 8th. A fifth straight off month for THE DRIVE, sliding from 5th to 9th (the station was 2nd as recently as AUGUST). WLEY dipped from 6th to 10th.
WLUP dropped from 10th to 11th, placing just slightly ahead of CBS Rhythmic WBBM-F (B96), which inched up from 13th to 12th. WBEZ and WPPN tied for 13th. WLS-F slid from 11th to 15th, appearing to have taken a hit from LITE-FM. WILV and WXRT both showed slight gains and tied for 16th. WCFS took a pretty significant hit from the holiday music on LITE-FM and dropped from 12th to 18th. WLS-A dipped from 16th to 19th, while EMMIS Alternative WKQX (Q101) moved into 20th place.
18-34: A stunning win for LITE-FM in this cell -- and growth of 257% in this demo -- knocking WOJO into the #2 position. WKSC slid from 2nd to 3rd, with WGCI dipping from 3rd to 4th -- although both were clearly related to LITE-FM's jump. V103 continued to climg as it soared from 8th to 5th. WLEY and B96 dipped a notch to 6th and 7th, followed by US99, which slid from 3rd to 8th. WTMX heldin share but is off in rank from 7th to 9th, with WPPN rounding out the top 10.
Nassau-Suffolk (Long Island): WBLI, WALK Share Demo Crowns
COX Top 40 WBLI and CLEAR CHANNEL AC WALK shared the demo leads on LONG ISLAND in DECEMBER. WBLI remained in control among adults 18-34, but CHRISTMAS music fueled WALK to a win 18-49, while the latter held on to its usual 25-54 crown (despite a 25% dencrease).
Here are the top 5 by demo on the island (in descending order):
25-54: WALK, WBLI, COX Classic Rock WBAB, BARNSTABLE AC WKJY, and BARNSTABLE Classic Hits WBZO.
18-49: WALK, WBLI, WKJY, WBAB, and JARAD Rhythmic WDRE.
18-34: WBLI, WALK, WDRE, WKJY, and WBAB.
Riverside-San Bernardino: KOLA, KRQB Lead Demos; KGGI Solid
ANAHEIM Classic Hits KOLA and LIBERMAN Regional Mexican KRQB took the demo crowns in the INLAND EMPIRE, but CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic KGGI remained a strong 2nd in all three demos. Meanwhile, ALL PRO AC KATY leaps into the top 3 among adults 25-54.
25-54: KOLA won this demo by a large margin ... and is the only Classic Hits station to take the top spot in a PPM market. KGGI held in 2nd place, while KATY rose from 5th to 3rd. KRQB dipped from 3rd to 4th, just ahead of CBS Country KFRG.
18-49 (in descending order): KOLA, KGGI and KRQB (tied), KATY, and KFRG.
18-34 (in descending order): KRQB, KGGI, KOLA, KFRG, and LAZER Regional Mexican KXSB.
