BIG LEAGUE BROADCASTING Sports WQXI-A (790 THE ZONE)/ATLANTA "MAYHEM IN THE A.M." co-host STEAK SHAPIRO got into a shouting match with controversial former ATLANTA BRAVES pitcher JOHN ROCKER on THURSDAY night. The ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION reports that ROCKER was escorted from the new WHISKEY BLUE nightclub at the W HOTEL in BUCKHEAD after ROCKER confronted SHAPIRO over comments the host had made about him.
SHAPIRO told DEADSPIN.COM's RICK CHANDLER that ROCKER was staring at him, "trying that rock star pro wrestler stuff, so finally I say to him 'Let's try to be civil, OK? Can we be civil to one another?' And that's when he exploded." SHAPIRO said that ROCKER used a string of epithets, including calling the host a "Jew fa--ot" and other epithets. "That's ROCKER," SHAPIRO said. "He has anger issues; the guy can snap. He was a bully when he played, and nothing's changed."
ROCKER gave DEADSPIN's A.J. DAULERIO his own version of the confrontation, saying that SHAPIRO did ask if they could be "adults tonight" but also called ROCKER a "redneck," which set ROCKER off. ROCKER denied using the term "Jew" but admitted to calling SHAPIRO other names and denied being thrown out of the club, saying "there was no arrest, I wasn't escorted out, I walked out of the bar with my friend."
ROCKER visited crosstown CUMULUS Rock WNNX (ROCK 100.5)/ATLANTA's "THE REGULAR GUYS" MONDAY morning to reiterate his account of events and said that he would accept an apology from SHAPIRO and "I would shake his hand."
