Sen. DEBBIE STABENOW (D-MI) says that she intends to hold hearings in the Senate with an eye towards regulating "fairness" in Talk radio. STABENOW, whose husband TOM ATHANS was behind liberal talk producers/syndicators DEMOCRACY RADIO and TALK USA RADIO, told DIAL GLOBAL host BILL PRESS that she and her colleagues plan to investigate the "structural imbalance of political talk radio" and called for the return of the "Fairness Doctrine" or similar legislation to force "balance" in programming.
Asked by PRESS what can be done about the demise of several liberal Talk stations in the past few years, STABENOW said that the "Fairness Doctrine" should be required "in a market with owners that have multiple stations ... they have got to have balance ... you know, standard that says both sides have to be heard .... when you see the airwaves dominated by one view that, um, that then overwhelms people’s opinions – and unfortunately, incorrectly – I mean when we, uh, you know, when we hear the right wing conservative talk show hosts who are out there, just trying to make people angry and saying all kinds of things that aren’t true and so on. There has to be voices on the other side."
When PRESS asked specifically about bringing back the "Fairness Doctrine," STABENOW said, "I think it’s absolutely time to pass a standard. Now, whether it’s called the Fairness Standard, whether it’s called something else -– I absolutely think it’s time to be bringing accountability to the airwaves. I mean, our new president has talked rightly about accountability and transparency. You know, that we all have to step up and be responsible. And, I think in this case, there needs to be some accountability and standards put in place." Asked about hearings this year, she added, "I have already had some discussions with colleagues and, you know, I feel like that’s gonna happen. Yep."
