TOM CUDDY announced his resignation today as VP/Programming Hot AC WPLJ/NEW YORK, and the CITADEL Major Market FM Music Stations, completing his tenure as the longest continuous radio programmer (19 years) in NEW YORK CITY. His last day will be FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27th.
"It gives me great comfort and confidence knowing that I leave at a time when PLJ's 25-54 adult ARBITRON shares are near all-time highs and happily, the same can be said for our primary FM outlets in LA, CHICAGO, WASHINGTON, DALLAS, ATLANTA, DETROIT and MINNEAPOLIS as well," CUDDY said. "In terms of revenue, just last week the JANUARY, 2009 MILLER KAPLAN summary reported that we outperformed the local NY radio market by 15 points and increased our local revenue share by more than 20%. It is gratifying to see the 'PLJ sales team begin 2009 the same way we ended 2008, as the 3rd highest billing FM station in the nations #1 market. Not bad for a stand-alone FM.
It was the privilege of a lifetime to be part of an amazing team that not only turned WPLJ around but transformed it into one of the most consistent ... most-admired FM stations in America.
"Last week, it was announced that (Major Market Group Pres.) MITCH DOLAN and CITADEL have parted company and it occurred to me that it was nearly 19 years ago that MITCH and I arrived at 'PLJ with the mission of rehabilitating this iconic ABC station that had suffered a series of severe ratings and revenue challenges," he continued. "It was the privilege of a lifetime to be part of an amazing team that not only turned WPLJ around but transformed it into one of the most consistent, best run and, given it's multitude of industry awards, most-admired FM stations in America."
"Companies and cultures change and it strikes me that despite the tremendous sadness of leaving such a remarkable group of people and a job that I love -- and certainly comforted by the knowledge that 'PLJ is performing at such a high level -- I find myself believing that now may actually be the best time for me to seek a new adventure."
CUDDY says he has no formal plans for his next opportunity and after he leaves CITADEL, he can be reached at email@example.com.
