Obama: Fairness Doctrine Return A Non-Starter
February 18, 2009 at 2:00 PM (PT)
The raging brouhaha over an imminent return of "The Fairness Doctrine" has been snuffed out by a spokesperson for Pres. BARACK OBAMA. White House spokesman BEN LABOLT told FOXNEWS.COM. that the President opposes any move to bring back the Doctrine back.
"As the President stated during the campaign, he does not believe the Fairness Doctrine should be reinstated," LABOLT said.
Conservative Talk radio hosts have been raising the spectre of the Fairness Doctrine's return as a nefarious way to silence their voices by offering equal time to opposing views. A few politicians, most notably Sen DEBBIE STABENOW (NET NEWS, 2/5) and former Pres. BILL CLINTON (NET NEWS, 2/13), voiced support for its return. OBAMA senior adviser DAVID AXELROD did little to damper the conservative outcry when he punted the question on FOX NEWS (NET NEWS, 2/16), leaving the issue up to expected new FCC Chairman JULIUS GENACHOWSKI and the president to decide.
Looks like the President just did.
