KLSX To Be Top 40 AMP Radio On Friday
February 18, 2009 at 4:58 PM (PT)
CBS RADIO has announced that on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20th at 5p, it will flip FM Talk KLSX to Top 40 "97.1 AMP RADIO." Playing "All the Hits," AMP RADIO will combine the power of its on-air position with myriad online and digital applications creating a full 360-degree audio and visual experience for young adults.
Launching simultaneously on-air and online at www.ampradio.com, AMP RADIO will broadcast 10,000 songs in a row with limited commercial interruption from artists such as JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, BEYONCE, RIHANNA, KANYE WEST, USHER, BRITNEY, KELLY CLARKSON, and KATY PERRY, among others.
A wide array of events and concerts will be complemented by an online platform featuring "blogs, music videos, widgets, photo galleries, celebrity gossip reports, in-depth artist pages and an embeddable and multi-functional streaming player." Fans of the station can also stay connected through instant messaging, TWITTER, FACEBOOK, MYSPACE, and other social networking sites, as well as wirelessly via texting, and applications for the iPhone, and select BLACKBERRY devices.
"Creating a successful radio station not only means focusing on what you hear over the air -- it’s that, yet it’s so much more and as evidenced by what we're announcing today the possibilities are endless," noted SVP/Programming KEVIN WEATHERLY, the architect of the AMP RADIO format.
AMP RADIO originally debuted in FEBRUARY 2008 as an online entity and HD 2 station on CBS RADIO’s KCBS-F/LOS ANGELES. "Incubating AMP RADIO online and on HD 2 allowed us to experiment with different ideas, build brand loyalty, and analyze listener feedback,' WEATHERLY said. " We saw immediately the impact of the evolution of the station and watched the online audience steadily increase each month. In addition to that, PPM has shown us there are a significant number of younger listeners who are seeking out this type of programming and incorporating radio into their daily lives more than we ever thought."
"Launching this format, and the way in which we execute it across several different platforms, expands dramatically what we can offer advertisers," CBS RADIO/LOS ANGELES SVP/Market Manager DAN WEINER said. "And just as important, we're providing an alternative listening option for a dynamic sector of the LOS ANGELES population. Collectively, our portfolio of stations will now boast a significant share of the male and female audience of listeners ranging in age from 12+."
Speaking to ALL ACCESS, WEINER said, "After all the negative news in the headlines, and such, finally we have a real fun and exciting thing. We're letting all the KLSX jocks have their goodbyes, and a proper sendoff, before we launch 97.1 AMP RADIO.
"The whole concept of 97.1 AMP RADIO is a fun and exciting thing loaded with digital, mobile and traditional marketing beginning this weekend. Basically, its like an old-fashioned Top 40 radio war which is great. It's been a long time since that's happened."
WEINER continued, "KEVIN will be our day-to-day programmer for the immediate future. We will eventually add some personalities to 97.1 AMP RADIO who know how to engage the listener and the market. This is a lifestyle format which requires interaction. This is not a telescope only at KIIS-FM, but this station will have wide impact on the listener pool in the market. We think once they try it they will like it. All the hits and less of the interruptions that people have grown tired of."
Carolla, Others Out
Earlier in the day, ALL ACCESS learned that affiliates for ADAM CAROLLA's show were told that FRIDAY will be the last day for CAROLLA at CBS RADIO, although "best of" shows will be fed through WESTWOOD ONE for a month.
CAROLLA has been hinting about a "major announcement" during this morning's show, and FROSTY, HEIDI and FRANK mentioned the possibility of the end of the show in humorous fashion during the show, with FRANK KRAMER calling the talk "crap" but then laughing and admitting "I couldn't say that with a straight face"; the team referred to FRIDAY's show as a "party" and jokingly used MONDAY as the day for stunts that they clearly don't intend to do.
In addition, a source told ALL ACCESS that CAROLLA's fellow CBS RADIO Talk KLSX (97.1 FM TALK)/LOS ANGELES hosts FROSTY, HEIDI AND FRANK are also exiting as of FRIDAY, as will TOM LEYKIS.
