Ofcom Slaps Stations For Lacking Local Content

OFCOM has told SOUTH WEST RADIO, owner of AC BATH FM/BATH, ENGLAND and AC BRUNEL FM/SWINDON, ENGLAND, that the stations are not carrying enough local content.
The agency monitored the stations for three days in JANUARY, finding that the stations on JANUARY 12th carried automated music programming and commercials with outsourced, prerecorded news (repeated several times) and no local hosts in the midday slot. The stations were warned by OFCOM in DECEMBER about having no local material or hosts.
OFCOM issued another warning this time, with punitive action threatened if the problem persists over the next three months.
The ruling comes the day after OFCOM released proposals that included allowing local radio stations to merge operations and share programming, potentially eliminating local programming on smaller stations in favor of networks of regional stations.
