The NEW YORK DAILY NEWS is reporting that federal prosecutors are alleging that SPANISH BROADCASTING SYSTEM secretly sent $331,000 to nonprofits controlled by former NEW YORK State Senator EFRAIN GONZALEZ, indicted and awaiting trial on fraud charges, in an attempt to get GONZALEZ help to block UNIVISION's 2003 purchase of HISPANIC BROADCASTING CORP.
Prosecutors allege that SBS donated to three nonprofits in the BRONX, the WEST BRONX NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION, the UNITED LATIN AMERICAN FOUNDATION, and the NATIONAL HISPANIC POLICY INSTITUTE, the latter of which sued to block the UNIVISION-HBC merger; court papers charge that GONZALEZ and girlfriend LUCIA SANCHEZ used accounts at two of the charities to pay personal expenses.
GONZALEZ and SANCHEZ are scheduled to go on trial MAY 4th.
