A heritage casualty of the current recession on radio could be the livelihood of NY TIMES CO. Classic WQXR/NEW YORK. The NEW YORK POST reports on rumors that TIMES CO. executives are mulling the possibility of selling the venerable Classical station as a way to ameliorate its "dwindling cash stash, which ... is down to $34 million after debts are weighed in."
Owned by THE TIMES since 1944, WQXR has never been a big moneymaker. In the MARCH PPMs, WQXR finished 18th in AQH. The POST also noted speculation that an interested suitor in WQXR could be ESPN, which is looking for a new signal to broadcast KNICK, JET and RANGER games.
