Obama Supreme Court Pick Boasts Net Savvy

The number of tech blogs have picked up an under-reported insight into Pres. BARACK OBAMA's Supreme Court pick, Circuit Court of Appeals Judge SONIA SOTOMAYOR -- she'll be the first tech-savvy Justice. Unlike retiring Justice DAVID SOUTER, who has never even owned a computer, SOTOMAYOR has ruled on a number of cyberlaw decisions -- and has experience as an intellectual property lawyer.
According to WIRED.COM, SOTOMAYOR has "ruled against companies that have deliberately hidden or misleading EULAs, limited the powers of the executive to acquire user information and records from ISPs with National Security letters, and widened online publications' rights to resell freelancers' content without additional payment."
GIZMODO.COM, which paraphrased the WIRED story in the preceding paragraph, also speculated that SOTOMAYOR's experience as an intellectual property lawyer could make her more sympathetic to arguments by artist and content provider organizations such as the RIAA and MPAA "should the court hear any filesharing-related cases during her tenure, which they almost certainly will."
