Tirrell's Return To Des Moines Radio Delayed By Noncompete

Former CLEAR CHANNEL Sports KXNO-A/DES MOINES host MARTY TIRRELL's move to crosstown CITADEL Sports KBGG-A (AM 1700 THE CHAMP) for 4-6p weekdays was supposed to take place TODAY (6/1), but the DES MOINES REGISTER reports that TIRRELL, who was fired by KXNO for a profane tirade on MARCH 20 that accidentally made it to the air, will have to wait until as late as SEPTEMBER due to a noncompete clause in his contract with KXNO.
TIRRELL's rapid return to the air was based on the fact that he will not be employed by CITADEL but is instead buying the time through advertisers, and will air the show from the dealership of advertiser TOYOTA OF DES MOINES. TIRRELL maintained that the noncompete clause would not be enforceable since he would not be a CITADEL employee; CITADEL VP/Market Manager TERRY PETERS told the REGISTER that THE CHAMP would hold the slot open for TIRRELL, who may be kept off the air through SEPTEMBER 20. "This isn’t CITADEL's fight, it is MARTY TIRRELL's fight," said PETERS. "We are going to wait until it is cleared up, but keep the time slot reserved for him as soon as he can get the non-compete cleared up."
