When Pigs Fly?

AUSTRALIAN GOLD COAST station GOLD FM has been given a roasting by animal welfare group the RSPCA after it tried to make a piglet "fly" by tying helium balloons to it, reports THE BRISBANE TIMES. The RSPCA QUEENSLAND has expressed disgust at the stunt by the station's morning duo RICHARD and BRIDGE, which saw the piglet tethered to more than 200 helium-filled balloons for about an hour this morning.
"The animal was clearly distressed," RSPCA QLD Senior Veterinarian Dr. ANNE CHESTER said. "Would they have done this to a puppy, a kitten or a foal? I think not! What on earth possessed station management? Why did they allow something so grossly inappropriate to go ahead? Frankly it defies belief."
The RSPCA, which has the power to prosecute animal cruelty cases, said is was considering whether to take action against the radio station and demanded an immediate apology.
But GOLD FM PD JASON MATTHEWS was unrepentant this afternoon, telling brisbanetimes.com.au the stunt had been done in a "controlled environment with a pig handler there at all times. "The pig was not distressed at all, it was fine. This pig does children's parties with screaming toddlers running around. It does the circuit."
