Report: Tribune Considering Second Bidder For Cubs
June 22, 2009 at 4:42 AM (PT)
The bid by the RICKETTS family to buy the CHICAGO CUBS from TRIBUNE CO. has reportedly hit a snag, and the TRIBUNE is now "assessing other alternatives" such as talking to another bidder, spokesman GARY WEITMAN told the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. WEITMAN said that talks with the RICKETTS family, the founders of AMERITRADE, continue, but the paper reports that TRIBUNE is separately talking to investor MARK UTAY about another bid.
The RICKETTS' bid of $900 million beat out nine other finalists, including UTAY, for the franchise, WRIGLEY FIELD, and a share of COMCAST SPORTSNET CHICAGO, but talks to finalize the deal have apparently bogged down.
