Rockefeller Won't Hold Up McDowell's Return To FCC

Sen. JAY ROCKEFELLER (D-WV), Chairman of the SENATE COMMERCE COMMITTEE, tells DOW JONES that he will not block the reappointment of ROBERT MCDOWELL to the FCC. ROCKEFELLER had previously been thought to oppose MCDOWELL's return after the Commissioner gave what ROCKEFELLER thought was an inadequate answer at last week's committee confirmation hearing to a question about the E-RATE phone subsidy peogram for schools and libraries.
ROCKEFELLER said that a letter from MCDOWELL "gave a much warmer endorsement of the E-RATE program ... I got more than I expected," but remains concerned that MCDOWELL may be too closely tied to the telecommunications industry.
MCDOWELL and Chairman nominee JULIUS GENACHOWSKI's nominations are expected to be voted upon by the full Senate by the end of next week, barring any delay due to negotiations over other WHITE HOUSE nominees.
