All Access Exclusive PPM Analysis: San Francisco And Atlanta

RADIOCRUNCH principals KEVIN MCCABE and ANTHONY ACAMPORA take us to SAN FRANCISCO and ATLANTA for the latest MAY PPM results.
San Francisco: KMEL, KSOL Lead 18-34, 18-49
Venerable CLEAR CHANNEL Urban outlet KMEL commanded the top spot in two key demos in two key demos - 18-34 and 18-49 in the MAY 2009 PPM monthly. ENTERCOM AC KOIT took top honors 25-54, while CUMULUS grabbed three of the top-five stations 25-54.
CLEAR CHANNEL: KMEL continued its reign at the top of the 18-34 cell in THE BAY AREA results. KMEL has ranked #1 18-34 since the PORTABLE PEOPLE METER became currency in OCTOBER 2008. The station was the clear winner 18-34 and 18-49 in MAY. CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic KYLD (WILD 94-9) held #3 from APRIL. KMEL and KYLD did a masterful job of maintaining distinct positions KYLD held #3 18-49 as well.
Hot AC KIOI jumped from 9th in APRIL to 5th place in MAY among 18-49 adults. MAY was the third consecutive month that KIOI ranked 9th 25-54.
Rhythmic AC KISQ maintained 10th 18-34, but slipped out of the top 15 in both the 18-49 and 25-54 cells. KISQ moved from a 15th place tie in APRIL with INNER CITY Urban AC KBLX to 16th in MAY.
CBS: Top 40 KMVQ (MOVIN) slipped from 6th in APRIL to 7th in MAY in its principal target of 18-34. For the most part, KMVQ was still trying to gain traction against the two CC powerhouses KMEL and KYLD. KMVQ tied for 10th 18-49 with CUMULUS Rock KSAN.
Alternative KITS (LIVE 105) held steady in 8th place 18-34, holding 8th for the 4th consecutive PPM monthly. Outside of 18-34, KITS dipped in rank, coming in at 17th 18-49 and 19th 25-54 tied with CLEAR CHANNEL Classic Rock KUFX.
News KCBS-A landed in a three-way tie at 3rd 25-54 with CUMULUS Rock KSAN and CUMULUS Sports KNBR-A. All-News continued to be a solid format performer in THE BAY AREA -- unlike the not-even-top-15 results for the CBS All-News outlets in the LOS ANGELES market.
Hot AC KLLC (ALICE) ranked 15th 18-34 and got a boost from 14th place in APRIL to a tie at 12th place in MAY with ENTERCOM Country KBWF. KLLC The big news for KLLC was its rise to top 10 in MAY as ALICE jumped from #13 to tie for 10th with CC Rhythmic KYLD. KLLC continued to make musical adjustments under PPM measurement -- and is more in step with mainstream Hot AC music than ever before in its history -- getting a lot closer to rival KIOI.
CITADEL: While Talk KGO has always been a 12+ performer, it was still out of the top 10 25-54 and it ranked 12th in May. Meanwhile, sister KSFO dropped from 23rd to 27th.
CUMULUS: The CUMULUS portfolio in THE BAY AREA had a strong MAY in metered measurement. Heritage AAA outlet KFOG pulled another 2nd place finish in the lucrative 25-54 demo -- holding its rank at #2 from APRIL. KFOG continued to be the highest-rated AAA station in the format as measured by PPM.
Sports KNBR-A soared from 8th into a tie for 3rd 25-54 Interest in THE BAY AREA teams drove decent PPM results for KNBR -- and between the SAN FRANCISCO and OAKLAND franchises, there is plenty to talk about. S.F. GIANTS games were broadcast during the metered month.
Rock KSAN (THE BONE) was striking a chord with BAY AREA 25-54s as the station jumped from 5th to a a three-way tie for 3rd with CBS All-News KCBS-A and CUMULUS sister KNBR-A.
ENTERCOM: AC KOIT landed the top spot 25-54 in MAY -- up from 4th place in APRIL. KOIT was the dominant AC station in THE BAY AREA and landed #1 25-54 for the first time since the Holiday book.
Country KBWF (THE WOLF) fell out of the top 10 25-54 in MAY by slipping from 10th to a tie for 14th with KMEL. KBWF held 12th place in a tie with KFOG 18-49 -- a very respectable showing for Country in the SAN FRANCISCO market.
UNIVISION: Regional Mexican KSOL was a solid #2 18-34 and 18-49 behind KMEL in both demos.
Atlanta: A Clean Sweep For #1 In All Three Demos For Urban WVEE; WSTR Sees Growth
It's not just the summer temperatures that are creeping up in the South's biggest city. The Top 40 battle between CUMULUS' WWWQ (Q100) and LINCOLN FINANCIAL'S WSTR (STAR 94) sees some heat in the MAY PPM monthly. Let's take a look at who did what in MAY.
CUMULUS: Top 40 WWWQ is CUMULUS' big player in ATLANTA as evidenced by its consistent strong performances in all three demographics. Q100 ranks 3rd 18-34, 2nd 18-49, and 5th 25-54. Between its defined mainstream Top 40 music position -- and the wildly popular BERT SHOW, Q100 has been a PPM winner with top 5 rankings since the PPM became currency in the ATLANTA market.
WNNX, which has shifted from Rock toward AAA is still trying to find its niche, ranks 19th 25-54 and 18th 18-49.
LINCOLN FINANCIAL: WSTR (STAR 94) experiences a very solid MAY in PPM with a rise from 10th to 5th place in the 18-34 cell. STAR 94 rises 13th to 9th 18-49 and gets a slight lift 25-54 as well by moving from a 9th place tie in APRIL with CITADEL Country WKHX to 7th in MAY.
CBS: WVEE (V103) is indeed the "people's station" in ATLANTA as the venerable Urban outlet takes top honors in all three demos analyzed by RADIOCRUNCH. V103 continues to be a standout peformer in PPM measurement and a model for the Urban format.
AAA WZGC (DAVE-FM) falls sharply out of the top 10 25-54 with a drop to 12th place tie. WZGC slips from 11th in APRIL to 16th in MAY with 18-49.
RADIO ONE: The RADIO ONE Urban outlets experience a strong PPM monthly with Urban WHTA bumping up to 2nd 18-34 in MAY from 3rd place in APRIL. In the 18-49 cell, Urban AC WAMJ jumps into the top 5 with a move to 4th from a 7th place tie in APRIL with CLEAR CHANNEL Active Rock WKLS. RADIO ONE has built a solid Urban format cluster in ATLANTA as the company's third property Gospel WPZE secures a slight boost to 8th place 25-54 in a tie with COX Classic Rock WSRV.
Urban, Urban AC, and Gospel has proven a winning cluster strategy for RADIO ONE.
CLEAR CHANNEL: In the 18-34 demo, CC's first showing is at #6 with Regional Mexican WBZY (EL PATRON). WBZY slips to 6th 18-34 from 5th in APRIL, holds steady at #10 18-49.
Active Rock WKLS drops out of the top 10 18-49 with a slip to #11 from a 7th place in APRIL. WKLS slides from 6th to 7th 18-34.
Country WUBL has grown consistently the last several months and moves into 15th place 25-54 -- closing the gap on WKHX.
COX: The big gun for COX in ATLANTA 18-34 is Rhythmic WBTS (THE BEAT). WBTS holds 4th place from APRIL to MAY in the 18-34 cell and climbs from 9th place to a tie for 7th in MAY. WBTS has been one of the Rhythmic formats strongest PPM performers.
COX has two of the top three and four of the top eight 25-54. News/Talk WSB-A ranks 2nd, while Urban AC WALR is a solid 3rd. AC WSB-F is 6th, with Classic Rock WSRV holds in 8th place -- putting all four of COX's 25-54 targeted stations inside the top 8 in that cell.
CITADEL: Country WKHX has struggled the last few months, although is still inside the top 10 25-54. It scores its lowest shares 18-49.
Classic Hits WYAY (TRUE OLDIES) ranks 18th 25-54.
