June 29, 2009 at 4:57 AM (PT)
RADIOCRUNCH principals KEVIN MCCABE and ANTHONY ACAMPORA check in with the final part of their MAY analysis. We start off with cars in the MOTOR CITY and then head down to THE LONESTAR STATE TEXAS to check in on DALLAS and HOUSTON.
WXYT (THE TICKET) scores 18-49 and 25-54 in Motor City. Top 40 WKQI strong; WDVD #2 in two demos
The ongoing woes of America's big three automakers continued to be major news out of DETROIT in MAY. But the Chapter 11 filings were not enough to slow down the market's clear thirst for professional sports and the radio station that clearly owns those fans is CBS RADIO's WXYT. The FM sports outlet finished the game in MAY in first place in both the 25-54 and 18-49 adult demos. Let's go group-by-group in DETROIT.
CBS: WXYT was the only Sports outlet in PPM measurement to top two demos. Evidently, the warming Spring temperatures in MICHIGAN and the opening of the DETROIT TIGERS' season was enough to send fans to WXYT to stay abreast of all the updates. The RED WINGS playoff run (they went all the way to the STANLEY CUP Finals) helped WXYT as well. WXYT ranked 3rd 18-34, so it's performing quite well with the younger fans too. WXYT had its best 25-54 adult numbers yet.
Country WYCD continued to fare moderately well in PPM measurement. WYCD was top 10 25-54 and moved to 9th in the MAY monthly -- up from 10th place in APRIL. WYCD rose from 10th to 6th 18-49, proving that DETROIT is still very much a potent Country music marketplace.
Classic Hits WOMC ticked up to 12th 25-54 from 13th last month. Interestingly, WOMC got a nice boost with the 18-34 cell with a 9th place finish.
News WWJ-A moved back into the top 10 25-54, climbing into 10th place.
Smooth AC WVMV ranked 15th 25-54. While this is nowhere near where they performed in the diary, it was better than many of the stations still in the format in PPM.
CLEAR CHANNEL: CC Urban outlets continued to be PPM winners. Urban WJLB ranked #1 18-34 for a second consecutive month and jumped into 5th place tie with adults 25-54. WJLB got bumped down 18-49 as a result of the WXYT surge to #1. Urban AC WMXD held its top 10 status 25-54, ranking 7th.
Top 40 WKQI pulled another solid at #2 18-34. Up until the APRIL season opener of the TIGERS, WKQI had been #1 18-34 but lost the top spot when WXYT charged ahead. WKQI slipped to 4th -- down from 2nd 18-49 -- but held steady at 4th in the 25-54 cell. Top 5 in all three cells is pretty impressive.
AC WNIC moved out of the top 10 with a slip from 8th to 14th 25-54 and gotbeat by GREATER MEDIA rival WMGC (more on that later).
Country WDTW was pretty much out of the competitive loop, ranking 17th 25-54.
CITADEL: The automakers may be stalling, but Hot AC isn't in DETROIT as CITADEL's WDVD scored another round of very successful finishes for the MAY PPM monthly. WDVD was a strong #2 behind WXYT in both the 18-49 and 25-54 cells, and ticks up to 4th place from last month's #5 ranking 18-34. We have noted that Hot AC is proving a valuable commodity in PPM measurement and the DETROIT market is front and center as proof of this assertion.
Adult Hits WDRQ remained a solid top 5 performer 25-54.
However, Talk WJR-A dropped from 14th to 19th 25-54 in MAY.
GREATER MEDIA: Active Rock WRIF was riding high in PPM measurement with its strong showing 25-54. WRIF jumped from 5th place in APRIL to 3rd in MAY. It's also #5 18-49.
Classic Rock WCSX scored moves back inside the top 10 and rises from 11th to 7th 25-54.
AC WMGC dipped from 9th to 13th 25-54, but beats CLEAR CHANNEL rival WNIC for the first time in PPM.
RADIO ONE: The company got mixed results. Urban WHTD ranked 8th 18-34 (versus #1 for rival WJLB).
Urban AC WDMK was starting to show some growth, and scored its best rank and share yet in PPM -- climbing from 15th to 11th 25-54, tightening the race with CC rival WMXD.
Others: CTV GLOBEMEDIA Alternative CIMX (89X) returned to the top 5 18-34. They also moved from 11th to 9th 18-49.
MASONS Urban AC WGPR ranked 18th 25-54.
Dallas: Clear Channel Stations Take Demo Honors
The CLEAR CHANNEL cluster in the METROPLEX had lots to celebrate in MAY as Top 40 KHKS took the top position 18-34 and 18-49, while sister Hot AC KDMX was the winner 25-54 -- surging all the way from 9th place in May. Meanwhile, the Country battle in DALLAS-FT. WORTH sees KPLX topple KSCS by a healthy margin.
CLEAR CHANNEL: Another solid book for Top 40 KHKS -- led by KIDD KRADDICK. The station topped the 18-34 and 18-49 rankings for a 3rd straight month, but did relinquish the 25-54 crown to Hot AC sister KDMX.
KDMX moves from 9th to 1st 25-54, 8th to 3rd 18-49, and 9th to 3rd 18-34 -- for a huge increase across all demos.
Classic Rock KZPS has been sliding a bit lately. It has gone from 3rd in MARCH to 6th in APRIL and now 8th in MAY 25-54.
Active Rock KEGL moves from 12th to 9th 18-34, holds in 13th place 18-49, and slides from 16th to 17th 25-54.
Alternative KDGE drops from 4th to 8th 18-34, but rises from 12th to 11th 18-49.
While none of the CC rock stations are dominant, they do have complete control of a very valuable genre of music in the METROPLEX.
CBS: DALLAS-FT. WORTH has been a challenging market for CBS the last few years, but the company has two stations in the top 5 this month -- and another one getting closer to the top 10.
Adult Hits KJKK (JACK-FM) continues to ride a nice wave, rising into a tie for 5th place 25-54 -- and landing their best 25-54 share to date. JACK also rises from 9th to 5th 18-49.
AC KVIL slides from 3rd into a tie with JACK for 5th place 25-54. They also rank a very solid 6th 18-49.

News KRLD-A ranks 23rd 25-54
Sports KRLD-F continues to struggle, ranking 28th 25-54. However, good news is we're seeing steady growth each month.

Sports KTCK remains a top 10 performer, ranking 9th 25-54.
The format flip of Classic Rock KDBN to AAA did not pan out in Month 1. KDBN dropped from 23rd to 32nd 25-54, and lost well over half its shares.
CITADEL: Country KSCS drops from 4th to 7th 25-54, with KPLX widening its lead. KSCS also slides from 5th to 9th 18-49.
Talk WBAP ranks 15th 25-54, while Classic Hits KPMZ ranks 31st.
UNIVISION: Spanish Adult Hits KLNO (RECUERDO) no longer holds the leadership position across all demos, but it still remains the leading Spanish-language outlet in the competitive DALLAS marketplace. It ranks 4th 25-54 and 18-49 and 6th 18-34.
Spanish Contemporary KESS ranks 14th 18-34, 23rd 18-49, 29th 25-54.
Regional Mexican KFZO ranks 20th 18-34 -- which is much lower than most UNIVISION Regional stations.
LIBERMAN: Regional Mexican KBOC is now the leading station in the format leader. It climbs from 10th to 6th 18-34 and 17th to 12th 18-49.
Sister Regional Mexican KNOR slides from 8th to 10th 18-34, and 16th to 18th 18-49.

Meanwhile, LIBERMAN has seen some upper demo growth from KZZA, which flipped from Latin Urban to Regional Mexican Oldies a few months back. KZZA goes from 31st in MARCH to 26th in MAY.

Houston: Clear Channel Lands 4 Of Top 10 25-54; Radio One Owns 2 Of Top 3
