Former CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WHYI (Y100)/MIAMI GSM and SOUTH FLORIDA radio vet DAVID D'EUGENIO was honored for his heroism in saving the life of a woman trapped in a burning car. "From the time I noticed it to the time we were able to exit the woman from the vehicle, it had to be only three or for minutes," D'EUGENIO told THE PALM BEACH POST.
"It's three or four minutes he will never forget. D'EUGENIO was driving on Linton Boulevard near DELRAY BEACH when he saw searing flames growing underneath a LEXUS sedan with a woman inside." "So we really made the decision, we've got to get her out of there," D'EUGENIO said.
"He and two other people jumped into action and tried just about everything they could to break the windshield. Nothing seemed to work until they grabbed a big rock. They finally broke the window. But there was another obstacle.
"It was a very heavy, black smoke, and I can still taste it," D'EUGENIO describes the smell and taste like burning rubber. They were finally able to pull the woman from her car; parts of it are still melted in the road.
D'EUGENIO met with DELRAY BEACH Fire Lieutenant SHAWN BECKOWITZ hours after the rescue. His crew tended to the good samaritans." "We do have citizens that are willing to get involved and quite frankly risk their own lives," said Lt. BECKOWITZ. He also said that if it weren't for D'EUGENIO, the woman would have died in her car.
"I think we owe it to each other to do what ever we can whenever we can to help one another," D'EUGENIO said."
