Sales of MICHAEL JACKSON music have exploded in the days following his death last month. According to NEILSEN SOUNDSCAN, for the week ending JULY 5th, album sales totaled over 800,000 pieces (18% were digital). This represents another 90% increase in sales, following the whopping 4000% sales spike in the week immediately following his death.
The top two best-selling albums this week are his NUMBER ONE'S hits collection which sits at #1 on the Comprehensive Album Chart with 339,228 pieces sold. At #2 is THRILLER – the best-selling album of all time – with 187,460 units scanned.
On the SOUNDSCAN Top Catalog Album Chart, each album in the Top 10 belongs to JACKSON.
Regarding US Digital Track Sales, the numbers are equally impressive. Since tracking began in 2004, no artist has sold more than 1 million tracks in one week – until now. Last week over 2.3 million JACKSON tracks were sold, while an additional 2 million were scanned this week.
On the global stage, sales for JACKSON digital tracks totaled 2.95 million last week and 2.7 million this week. Factor in an additional 576,000 JACKSON 5 digital downloads for the same two week period and total digital single sales topped 6.2 million.
Music videos were also affected as NIELSEN reports the Top 4 spots on the Music Video Chart belong to JACKSON. Sales were up a dramatic 250% this week and an amazing 2000% the prior week.
