In With The New As BBC Radio 1 Shakes Up Middays

EDITH BOWMAN and JO WHILEY are moving to weekends at Top 40 BBC RADIO 1 in a shakeup that sees the longtime station personalities replaced by younger colleagues. BOWMAN (35 years old) will move from 1-4p middays to weekend breakfast 7-10a, replaced on weekdays by 23-year-old early breakfast host GREG JAMES, with weekend breakfast host DEV taking JAMES' old slot. WHILEY (44 years old) goes from 10a-12:45p middays to weekend afternoons 1-4p, replaced by weekender FEARNE COTTON (27).
The moves take effect SEPTEMBER 21st and have drawn attention from the U.K. press for the age changes, which are alternately being questioned for "ageism" and noted as a response to widespread speculation that RADIO 1's host lineup had become "too old" for its audience. Speculation that morning host CHRIS MOYLES (35) and/or afternoon host SCOTT MILLS (also 35) would face removal for the latter reason has been quashed by the hosts' retention in the new lineup.
Controller ANDY PARFITT said, "BBC RADIO 1 must continue to change to connect with a new generation of audiences and this is a significant move, promoting three of our up-and-coming broadcasters into the heart of the schedule."
