KLBJ-A/Austin Cancels 'Todd And Don Show'
July 20, 2009 at 3:03 PM (PT)
It's over for EMMIS Talk KLBJ-A/AUSTIN's morning "TODD AND DON SHOW," as TODD JEFFRIES and DON PRYOR get "reassigned" at the station in the wake of their two-week suspension for PRYOR's sarcastic use of "wetback" to refer to illegal immigrants. JEFFRIES will continue as News Director and will return to the air at the end of his suspension, and PRYOR will be reassigned to off-air duties.
A statement from VP/Market Manager SCOTT GILMORE indicates that the decision was heavily influenced by contributions from Hispanic commuity leaders, with GILMORE writing, "The two hosts apologized on-air last week, and I believe their apologies to be sincere, however, after hearing from hundreds of KLBJ-A listeners, from many other members of the community, and after seeking out the advice and counsel of community leaders, including this group of gentlemen: former AUSTIN Mayor GUS GARCIA, former State Senator GONZALO BARRIENTOS, Mr. FRANK FUENTES epresenting the U.S. HISPANIC CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION, and Mr. PAUL SALDANA of ADELANTE SOLUTIONS, (And we asked many others for their opinions, including Councilman MIKE MARTINEZ and representatives of the HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE) ... we determined that the cancellation of the show was the right thing to do for our employees, our station, our company, EMMIS AUSTIN Radio – part of EMMIS COMMUNICATIONS – and for the community."
