DILLINGHAM CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT noncommercial KDLG-A/DILLINGHAM. AK News Dir. EILEEN GOODE has resigned after her blog posts about life in the ALASKA town created a local uproar. The ANCHORAGE DAILY NEWS reports that GOODE, a MASSACHUSETTS expatriate, joined KDLG in 2007 and blogged at a site called "CHILLY HELL," intended for herself and her friends back in NEW ENGLAND, but the blog entries were discovered by DILLINGHAM residents who were angered by her criticism of local life.
"I love living in a place where I can be treated as a respectable personage simply by dint of being sober, employed and totally uninterested in having sex with relatives or children," GOODE wrote about her new town, adding posts dealing with the local issues of alcoholism and sexual abuse. The blog was largely unnoticed until recent weeks, when an anonymous e-mail quoting GOODE's blog circulated in town, featuring her comments on the locals' "sexual relations with relatives" and people "passing drunk women around like poorly rolled joints," plus her musing "Is it too much to ask for someone to die tragically?" when a 21-year-old EMT died the day before THANKSGIVING, adding that the story wasn't a tragedy because friends could have prevented the woman's drinking-related freezing death.
GOODE says she was asked to resign last FRIDAY, although station management denies it, and she says she was pushed in a ditch by one man and refused service at a bar this weekend before she submited her resignation MONDAY. She told the DAILY NEWS that she will leave the blog active and stands by her writing, adding that what she wrote was true even if said in a tasteless manner.
