Boycott Leads To End Of 'World Soccer Daily'

WORLD SOCCER DAILY, which aired on SIRIUS XM RADIO and as a podcast, has ceased production in the wake of an advertiser boycott prompted by fans of LIVERPOOL FC. The boycott followed co-host STEVEN COHEN's comments about the 1989 HILLSBOROUGH disaster, which he blamed on ticketless LIVERPOOL fans surging into the stadium and causing the crush that killed 96 LIVERPOOL fans.
COHEN's comments on an APRIL show contradicted the results of the government inquiry into the incident that dismissed the idea that ticketless fans caused the crush. COHEN said on FRIDAY's final show that he has been subjected to threats and several advertisers have pulled their support, and also said that some of the threats were anti-Semitic. COHEN has also been dropped as a host of FOX SOCCER CHANNEL's "FOX FOOTBALL FONE-IN."
LIVERPOOL's NEW YORK fan club, LFCNY, posted a message at its website about the show's demise from boycott coordinator CONOR BRENNAN, writing that "STEVEN COHEN knowingly chose to lie about the 96, causing heartache and grief to the 96 families on MERSEYSIDE and LIVERPOOL fans worldwide. TODAY he has paid for those lies; the LFCNY does not exult the demise of WORLD SOCCER DAILY but is particularly glad that STEVEN COHEN has been called to account for those lies and hate ... This campaign has always been about the 96, never anything else. The truth of HILLSBOROUGH will out, Justice for the 96."
