August 26, 2009 at 4:56 AM (PT)
The good news for Canadian private commercial radio is that STATISTICS CANADA figures show a 12.2% increase in profits before interest and taxes to C$336.5 million in fiscal 2008, with overall revenues up 5.6% to C$1.6 billion and profit margin up to 21.1%, close to the industry's peak of 21.2% in 2005. The bad news is that the fiscal year ended AUGUST 31st and the numbers do not reflect the collapse of the economy.
Among the 2008 findings, AM stations' profit margins have risen to their best in 20 years, 8.1%, while FM shows a 24.5% profit margin, among the best performances in the media. Anglophone stations showed a 23% profit margin, with Francophone stations at 13.8% and other languages at 4.2%.
