WFTL's Katz, Kaufman Get Supermarket To Change Calendars

JAMES CRYSTAL RADIO Talk WFTL-A/FORT LAUDERDALE-WEST PALM BEACH hosts JEFF KATZ and JOYCE KAUFMAN were able to help convince the giant PUBLIX supermarket chain to change future versions of its in-store calendars after the company eliminated a mention of PEARL HARBOR REMEMBERANCE DAY and failed to include Israeli Independence Day, but included Muslim New Year, Haitian Flag Day, and Cuban Independence Day instead. The hosts spent six hours on WEDNESDAY (1/6) rallying listeners to contact PUBLIX's LAKELAND, FL headquarters and visit their local PUBLIX to complain.
KATZ said, "Someone made a deliberate decision to include Muslim New Year, Haitian Flag Day and Cuban Independence Day while choosing not to include any acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by our American heroes on DECEMBER 7th ... further, they chose not to note anything about SEPTEMBER 11th ... finally, it seems odd that in a community with such a large and vibrant Jewish community, PUBLIX also chose to omit Israeli Independence Day."
KATZ and KAUFMAN were the only media to cover the issue; after the campaign, PUBLIX released an apology and announced that the 2010 calendars would be removed from all SOUTH FLORIDA stores and the 2011 version would include the commemoration of DECEMBER 7th.
