Sen. RUSS FEINGOLD (D-WI) is pushing once again for the federal government to defund RADIO and TV MARTI, the stations aimed at CUBA. WISCONSIN PUBLIC RADIO reports that FEINGOLD is saying that the stations' programming, which he characterizes as propaganda, are not effective on Cuban citizens, with a recent survey cited to show that less than 2% of Cubans tune into the stations, and says that killing the stations would save about $300 million.
RADIO and TV MARTI have come under fire for not only programming content but accusations of patronage and cronyism, and for the signals being regularly jammed and unlistenable or unviewable in much of CUBA. FEINGOLD previously ripped the program in his "Spotlight on Spending" releases, issuing a press release in NOVEMBER criticizing federal spending on the stations. The latest initiative is part of a larger bill attempting to cut federal spending.
