Radio Responds To Haiti Earthquake

Promotion/marketing whiz PAIGE NIENABER has collected many of the ways radio is helping in the aftermath of the earthquake earlier this week in HAITI. Writes NIENABER, "Experts are calling this 'the greatest catastrophe in the history of the continent.' And here’s what some stations are doing with it:
CBS Top 40/R KLUC/LAS VEGAS: CAT THOMAS has put together a terrific web component with multiple ops for people to get involved. This is a station that has pretty much been in front of everything: 35W Bridge collapse in MINNY, KATRINA, 9/11, VIRGINIA TECH. There’s a reason they’ve left about 10 different competitors in the dust and into new formats. www.kluc.com.
CBS/HOUSTON: Top 40 KKHH (HOT HITS 95.7) and Spanish Contemporary KLOL (MEGA 101) are pairing up for a fundraiser tomorrow that will be collecting needed items. www.hot957houston.com/Haiti-Earthquake-Relief/6118710.
WIRED 96.3/SASKATOON: Is doing "Requests For HAITI TUESDAY" next week. $20 will get any song played.
REGENT/GRAND RAPIDS: God bless people who realize that this is Radio, that everything is essentially written in pencil. You can erase and write a new plan if you need to and do it on the spot. WLHT had a Salvation Army radio-thon set for next month. The SA has people in HAITI right now, helping. They scraped the ‘thon and are doing it next TUESDAY. Hard to beat a station that does that kinda stuff.
CBS News KDKA-A/PITTSBURGH: Because there is ALWAYS a local angle, always. Congrats to the station for following the story of two local women who are down there with 30 orphans. http://www.kdkaradio.com/Ben-Avon-women-won-t-abandon-Haiti-orphans/6118595.
CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 KHKS (106.1 KISS FM)/DALLAS: Nice web op to help. www.1061kissfm.com.
CBS Country KMLE/PHOENIX: Every station has some kind of link on it. This one stands out because it goes to the ABC affiliate and they have actual good info that I didn’t get from 100 other websites. Like Better Business Bureau tips on donating. www.kmle108.com.
