KMPS Listener Returns To U.S. After Haiti Earthquake
January 15, 2010 at 3:05 PM (PT)
CBS RADIO Country KMPS/SEATTLE MD/afternoon personality TONY THOMAS checks in with ALL ACCESS to tell us about a listener who has made it back to the STATES after being rescued in the aftermath of the HAITI earthquake. TONY writes:
"I got a call on TUESDAY (1/12) from KMPS listener JOSH, a former MARINE, who let me know that his 22 year-old sister KATIE had been a victim of the HAITIAN earthquake. She’d been working as a missionary there with a church group from the Northwest.
He let me know that the building KATIE was in collapsed on and around her. She told him, 'in school they teach us to stand in a doorway or under a desk or table but the doorway I was in was just wall with a hole in it, so I dove under a table. When they dug me out, I could feel them pulling the rocks off of my back and shoulders but a piece of the table had kept the rocks from enclosing around my head and made an air pocket for me to breathe.'
She was airlifted out to the medical facilities at GUANTANAMO BAY, then transported to a hospital in FLORIDA where her family has joined her. She has serious injuries, including a collapsed lung and damage to her spleen, lots of cuts, and will require surgery. Her brother told me all KATIE thinks about is "the people she left behind and the heroic HAITIAN nationals who risked their lives to rescue her."
The most touching part to me is her message: "Please continue to pray for the HAITIAN nation & the massive amount of aid needed there." I’m updating our listeners on the air on via my FACEBOOK page, at www.facebook.com/tonythomas.
JOSH told me, 'KATIE loves KMPS and I'm sure will want to say hi when she gets back home.' I can't wait."
