PECONIC PUBLIC BROADCASTING, the local group formed to save noncommercial WLIU/SOUTHAMPTON, LONG ISLAND, NY, has reached a deal with station owner and landlord LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY to buy the station for $850,000 and will move the station's studios from the SUNY STONY BROOK-SOUTHAMPTON campus in the next few days.
PECONIC made a $158,000 down payment on the station on MONDAY morning, reports the SOUTHAMPTON PRESS. The balance must be paid by JUNE 30th. LIU announced last year that it would close the station if no buyer was found, prompting a group of HAMPTONS residents to band together to raise funds backing the station management in purchasing the station.
