February 26, 2010 at 10:40 AM (PT)
DETROIT radio legend DICK PURTAN is bidding adieu to his illustrious career on an typically high and noble note, as he orchestrates his annual radiothon to benefit the Salvation Army. The DETROIT FREE PRESS reported that as of 10a, he had already raised more than $580,000, with a goal of breaking last year's haul of $2,262,931.
Naturally the event is attracting major local media coverage, and area celebrities such as BOB SEGER call in or stop by; SEGER donated a signed Fender guitar for the radiothon.
Since the radiothon's launch in 1988, nearly $22 million has been raised. It runs until 10p TODAY. Fans can listen to the 16-hour broadcast on WOMC/DETROIT or witness it live at OAKLAND MALL in TROY. Donations can be made by calling 248-307-1043, online at www.womc.com or by check to The SALVATION ARMY at 16130 Northland Dr., SOUTHFIELD, MI 48075.
Two weeks ago, PURTAN announced that the final show of his 45-year MOTOR CITY career will be on MARCH 26th.
